Thanksgiving Boxes

The Food Pantry is in need of the following items to pack Thanksgiving boxes for our clients:

  • 1 or 2 lb. canned hams (that do not need to be refrigerated)
  • large (28-50 oz.) cans green beans
  • large cans corn
  • large cans yams
  • cans of cranberry sauce
  • boxes of stuffing mix (Stove Top or generic brand)
  • glass bottles of gravy
  • boxes of instant mashed potatoes
  • packages of dinner rolls (shelf stable, not refrigerated/frozen)

If you are able to provide any of these items, please drop them off in the church office or at the Missions Tables between now and Sunday. Thank you!

Church Directory

We are currently finalizing photos and information for our new church directory. If you did not have your picture taken by our directory photographer, you still have the opportunity to be included in the directory by taking a current "selfie" and paying a $20 fee (which also allows you to receive a completed directory). All selfies are due by November 15th and can be emailed to kim@vintonbaptistchurch.org. If you need help having your picture taken, please call the church office and we will try to arrange for someone to come take your picture. Copyrighted pictures (taken by another company) and old pictures cannot be used.

Bible Reading Plan

Today was our last day of reading in Job. Don't worry - if you are behind, you have two catch-up days built into our reading calendar tomorrow and Friday before we tackle Ecclesiastes.

The last few chapters of Job have always been my favorite because God shows up and sets everyone straight! He addresses Job and his friends with the glories of his creation and the majesty of his role as creator and sustainer. I love to hear God speak of his grand creation! In the end, Job can only answer, "'I am unworthy - how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer - twice, but I will say no more'" (40:4-5). After additional questioning by God, Job says, "'Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. (...) My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes'" (42:3b, 5-6). Interestingly, the book ends with Job "in dust and ashes" - the same way it began (see 2:8). Yet, now Job is sitting in an attitude of personal repentance as a response to who God is, not necessarily grief over the things he has lost.

One detail from chapter 42 that I find terribly interesting is that God refused to accept the prayer of Job's friends alone. He said that he would accept Job's prayer on their behalf (42:8). That might seem to us like vindication for Job, but imagine being in Job's shoes and having to pray for forgiveness for these friends who have wronged you. I know that when I feel someone has wronged me, unfortunately praying for them is often not my first thought.

We'll jump into Ecclesiastes next week. In the meantime, just keep reading!

The staff of Vinton Baptist would like to express our appreciation for all the gifts, thoughts, prayers, cards, food, and sentiments of gratitude shown and voiced to us by the congregation during the month of October. We're now all "fat and happy"! Thank you for expressing your love in such tangible ways.
