Bible Reading Plan
Today was our last day of reading in Job. Don't worry - if you are behind, you have two catch-up days built into our reading calendar tomorrow and Friday before we tackle Ecclesiastes.
The last few chapters of Job have always been my favorite because God shows up and sets everyone straight! He addresses Job and his friends with the glories of his creation and the majesty of his role as creator and sustainer. I love to hear God speak of his grand creation! In the end, Job can only answer, "'I am unworthy - how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer - twice, but I will say no more'" (40:4-5). After additional questioning by God, Job says, "'Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. (...) My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes'" (42:3b, 5-6). Interestingly, the book ends with Job "in dust and ashes" - the same way it began (see 2:8). Yet, now Job is sitting in an attitude of personal repentance as a response to who God is, not necessarily grief over the things he has lost.
One detail from chapter 42 that I find terribly interesting is that God refused to accept the prayer of Job's friends alone. He said that he would accept Job's prayer on their behalf (42:8). That might seem to us like vindication for Job, but imagine being in Job's shoes and having to pray for forgiveness for these friends who have wronged you. I know that when I feel someone has wronged me, unfortunately praying for them is often not my first thought.
We'll jump into Ecclesiastes next week. In the meantime, just keep reading!
