The Witness

Volume 42, Issue 18

May 1, 2024

All Wednesday evening activities will take place as usual this evening. Tonight will be the last meeting of Weeknight Worship and Adult Bible Study for this season. Youth Missions Group and Children's Choirs will continue through May 15th. Chancel Choir rehearsal will continue through May 29th.

Join Us Saturday for a

Cinco de Mayo Extravaganza!

This Saturday, May 4th at 3:00 PM, Mariachi Alegria, a talented Mariachi band consisting of acoustic guitars, violin, trumpet, harmonica, accordion, maracas, and other percussion instruments, will don their sombreros and sequined outfits and lead this cross-cultural concert celebration. Singers will perform a broad selection of Mexican and southwest tunes sung in English and Spanish. Traditional dancers will dazzle us with their large, colorful dresses and choreography. This concert will be a cultural event for our community to come together, celebrate diversity, and bask in the beauty of art that transcends boundaries. Richard Rudolph, the director of the steel drum Christmas events we have come to love, is also the director/coordinator of this group. So plan to come out and have some fun! Admission is free; an offering will be taken.

This Sunday @ VBC

Join us this weekend for CHILDREN'S SUNDAY! Our children will have a part in every aspect of morning worship. Music will be led by our Children's Praise Team, and we'll hear from all three of our Children's Choirs. The kids are leading everything from the prelude to prayers. The only thing they're not doing is bringing the message; Travis will begin a new sermon series based in the Psalms. This week's scripture is Psalm 18:1-6, 31-36, and 46. If you cannot join us in person at 10:30 AM, you can livestream at www.vintonbaptistchurch.org and on our Facebook group page.

This Sunday will also be the last Extreme of this school year. All youth (6th - 12th grades) are invited to join us for a snack supper and Extreme. It all starts at 6:00 PM.

JOY Seniors Activities

The JOY Seniors will go to Attic Productions to see Dearly Beloved this Saturday, May 4th. It's not too late to sign up, but please do so ASAP! The bus will leave the church at 1:15 PM. If you plan to drive, please indicate that on the sign-up sheet and plan to be at the theater by 2:15 PM.

You do not want to miss the May luncheon! Our entertainment will be "The Brothers Young," a bluegrass group of two young brothers. Our lunch will be provided by McAlister's Deli, and the cost is $12. The date is May 21st (a bit earlier than most due to Memorial Day), so sign up at the JOY Senior table, mark your calendars, and come enjoy the fun and fellowship.

September 24th - 26th, the JOY Seniors will take a trip to Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Since this is a shared trip with Bonsack Baptist, seats will be limited, so sign up early to reserve your spot. See the JOY Senior brochure (located at the JOY Senior table) for details about costs and itinerary.

Thursday Morning Small Group Study

Please note that there will be no small group study Thursday morning, May 9th, as Travis and his family will be on the way to his graduation at Duke. There will also be no small group study May 30th.

Ministry Matters

We have our next Ministry Matters meeting scheduled for Sunday, May 19th at 5:00 PM in the gym. Among other business, we will have a brief overview of Realm, our church management software, and how it can be utilized for better communication among our church family. If you would like to get set up on Realm, bring your phone, tablet, laptop, or other mobile device, and we'll walk you through the process. (You will need access to your email if you have not already signed up for Realm.)

May Preteen Event (Plus Youth!)

On Sunday, May 19th, 4:00 - 6:00 PM, the Preteens are inviting the youth to join them to make VBS decorations. Please meet in the Preteen room. See Jessie Burgess with any questions.

WBHS Baccalaureate

The 2024 William Byrd High School Baccalaureate, presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, will be hosted by Vinton Baptist Sunday, May 19th at 6:00 PM in the sanctuary.

Bible Reading Plan

It's been a whirlwind working through the minor prophets the past few days. We're not done yet. Over the next week, we'll read Zephaniah and Haggai and get started in Zechariah. Please click each book listed in order to see an overview from BibleProject. Happy reading!

Financial Reimbursements

If you have receipts for which you need reimbursement, please fill out a Check Request Form and attach your receipt(s) to it. Check Request Forms are available on the clipboard beside Carrie's office door. The completed form, with receipts attached, should be left in the inbox on her office door. If a form is not included with your receipts, payment cannot be accurately processed. Thanks for your help in streamlining this process.

Graduate Info Needed

Graduate Recognition Sunday is May 19th. If you or someone in your family is graduating from high school, college, or grad school this year, please email kim@vintonbaptistchurch.org or call the church office at 540-343-7685 to let us know the following: name of graduate, school, any special honors, type of degree, future plans (example: if/where they will attend college or military service, or what career they are pursuing), and whether they will be able to attend worship May 19th. If your graduate cannot attend May 19th, we would still like to have their information so that we can recognize them in The Witness. Bibles for our high school seniors should be available next week for you to write notes of affirmation and highlight your favorite verses.

Vinton Baptist Church,

Thank you for the nice box of useful items I received from my church family at Easter. I miss being with my class, circle, and worship services. May God bless each of you.

-- Marietta Meador

I would like to thank everyone for the cards, emails, and calls during my transition from working in the office to working mostly from home while keeping my grandbaby. Your prayers and best wishes mean so much. You are a very special church family, and I'm so thankful to feel your love and support.

-- Carrie Tolley
