October 2023 Edition

Welcome to the October issue of The Wellness Corner - the e-newsletter for our community of advocates and enthusiasts - from Big Bend Cares and Care Point Health & Wellness Center.

In this issue, we recap the success of the 33rd Tallahassee AIDS Walk; bring our attention to the Holiday Angels program; recognize a monumental achievement from the Board of Directors; introduce an important awareness day in October; and remind you of other ways to support our mission.

Every day, Big Bend Cares and Care Point continue to provide essential assistance and quality health care to those we serve in the Tallahassee and Big Bend area (Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor and Wakulla counties). Our services include free HIV and STD testing, primary health care, dental care, lab work, sexual health education, courtesy transportation services, home-delivered meals, co-pay assistance for medications, and case management services.

These services wouldn't be possible without your generous donations, support, and contributions. To you reading this newsletter- thank you for helping us provide health care and much more to those in need - we appreciate you!

Thank you for reading!

Tallahassee AIDS Walk

We are overjoyed to report that this year's Tallahassee AIDS Walk was a great success, entirely through the hard work from volunteers and staff, and through support from all who participated. Thank YOU!

With over 300 participants, in addition to volunteers and staff working the event, we got to have the largest crowd turnout in years, many of which have been reaching out to share their satisfaction.

We had a record number of vendors in attendance, and were able to welcome the TPD giving out snow cones, along with Texas Roadhouse offering some delicious food.

Teams from across a wide range of industries and student organizations walked, representing the broad range of engagement we see from out community towards our mission of wellness.

Again, we are so thankful to those members of our community who were able to attend and raise awareness for the fight against HIV/AIDS!

We'd also like to give a huge Thank You once more to AIDS Walk's Title Sponsors:

Holiday Angels

Holiday Angels is starting up once more, and we're very excited to help as many children as possible this year! As in year's past, the Holiday Angels program seeks to connect the dependent children of our clients to individual and business sponsors that provide gifts for the holiday season. Big Bend Cares has held this program over many years, ensuring a growing number of children each year are connected to some new clothes and toys.

Last year was our biggest yet, managing and distributing the gifts for the 351 children enrolled in this amazing program.

Please consider joining us as a Holiday Angel yourself, giving the gift of a warm and joyful holiday season to children in need. Another way to support Holiday Angels is to spread the word, and engage any people or groups you think would find interest in sponsoring. We will be posting on social media frequently, which we appreciate you sharing. Also, it's very helpful to spread word to any faith groups, social organizations, professional circles, etc. you're a part of, as coming together to support a specific family's children has often been a fun and fulfilling holiday activity for these groups!

Congrats to Dan Taylor for Board Emeritus Recognition

With the completion of the 2022-2023 Board of Directors term, Big Bend Cares was able to recognize one of the highest honors that the agency can present. At this month's Board of Directors meeting, Dan Taylor, Board Member of 10 years, was recognized and welcomed to the Board Emeritus, a distinction for those who have served the maximum term length. We are so humbled to have known and worked with Dan for so many years, and thank him sincerely for his outstanding service and commitment to the Big Bend Cares mission!

National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day

National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day is October 15th. According to the CDC, one in six Latinos living with HIV in the United States are unaware that they have the virus. NLAAD aims to unite and mobilize the community to raise awareness and promote HIV Testing and Education.

Givers Every Month (GEM) Club

Last year, over 3,730 no cost food bags were given to our clients in Tallahassee and the Big Bend facing food insecurity because of our GEM Club members.

And GEM Club members make it possible for us to provide FREE comprehensive health care to our uninsured patients, with no sliding fee scale.

What is a GEM Club member?

It’s you and me - neighbors helping neighbors. GEM (Givers Every Month) Club members donate monthly and 100% of their gifts go towards food and health care for our neighbors in need. Want to become a GEM Club member and help us serve others? Click the button below:
