Welcome Rev. Dr. Carl and Denise Grosse

We are excited to welcome Rev. Dr. Carl Grosse and his wife, Denise to Fountain City Presbyterian Church. Our Director of Communication took a few minutes to ask Dr. Grosse some questions for the congregation to get to know him a little better!

Where are you from?

I was born in Pike County, IL and we moved to Great Falls, MT shortly after. I family spent 25 years in Montana and 31 years in Minnesota, with a few stops here and there along the way. My mama was from Mississippi, mostly Laurel (hey, that's where Hometown on HGTV takes place!) My cousins remind me I am half southern. Knoxville is a new adventure so I am open to exploring!

What are your hobbies?

The world is a treasure chest of wonderful things to learn and do! I enjoy music, outdoors, sports, foodie stuff (he is going to love the food scene in Knoxville!), history, art, DIY and travel!

What most excites you about interim ministry?

Interim ministry combines organizational tinkering with traditional pastoring. The work brings together important skills and experience I have acquired over the years, and I really love seeing people open up to new possibilities.

Tell us about your family!

Denise and I have been married 39 years. Our oldest daughter lives in Sacramento and our younger daughter lives in the Minneapolis area. We both have siblings and extended family all over the country and we love visiting them.

Are you a college football fan? How do you feel about orange?

Of course I'm following the Vols now!

If you want to swing by and meet Dr. Grosse anytime next week he asks that you email him, pastor@fountaincitypres.org, call the office 865-688-2163 or call or text his cell phone, 651-214-4174 to give him a heads up.

The Rev. Dr. Carl Grosse is a life-long Presbyterian. Growing up in Great Falls, MT, Carl served as a YAD to General Assembly in 1978. In college he began filling the pulpit for churches in south central Illinois. While at Pittsburgh Seminary, Carl was a youth pastor for one year, then a stated supply for a year and a half. After ordination, he served churches in Montana, Minnesota, and most recently Western New York. Fountain City is the 14th congregation he’s served since leaving Great Falls. His D. Min. degree from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul is in Marriage and Family Studies, and he is currently finishing Transitional Ministry training through The School for Global Citizenry.

From 2006 to 2022, Carl also worked at a data company in Minnesota, first as an account manager then as a product analyst. He still remembers some SQL syntax, and is not horrible with Excel. Carl and his wife Denise enjoy the outdoors, music, tennis, good food and good friends, whom they’ve been blessed with at every stop along the journey. They have two daughters, one in Sacramento and one in Minneapolis.

Can You Help Complete the Family Promise Volunteer Lineup?

The Mission Team needs 2 more volunteers to have ALL Family Promise volunteer opportunities filled. Can you spare spare 1.5 hours of your time on the morning of Sunday, September 24 to serve with 4 other people on the Family Promise Cleanup Crew? This crew will be sweeping, mopping, storing supplies, and having fun getting the 3rd floor ready for church on Sunday morning. To signup, please contact Tere McDonough (865-406-6417 or ttmcdono@gmail.com) or click on the link below and scroll near the end to the Cleanup Crew. Thanks to all volunteers who have signed up to provide hospitality to the families!
