Special Announcement

from Conference Minister Rev. Gordon Rankin

Friends in the New Hampshire Conference,

In October, I will have served among you for six years. That means I am due (actually, a little past due) for sabbatical leave. In consultation with our Conference Board of Directors, I have chosen to split my leave time in half. The first part will be taken in November and December 2024 and the second part in November and December 2025.

According to the little countdown clock on my phone, that means I start sabbatical in 4 months and 16 days. (I promise I don’t check the countdown all that often.) It seems it was about time to share some of the details with the broader conference.

In 2024, I will be combining six weeks of sabbatical leave with some vacation time. I will begin sabbatical on Monday, November 4th. I will be “back in the office” on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The core of this sabbatical time will be spending approximately three weeks in Zimbabwe. This will be my first visit with our Ukama partners in the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe. I couldn’t be more delighted that it is happening in a way that allows me the time and space to truly get to know the people in our partner churches. That is not to say there won’t be any official functions. I feel honored to have been asked to offer the Charge for the Reverend John Matiza’s Installation for his last term as UCCZ President.

After I return from Zimbabwe, I will have one other trip. I will be heading to Pheonix for the Authorizing Ministry in the 21 Century event that is held every two years.

Other than that, I will be spending the remainder of my sabbatical time reflecting on and writing about my time in Zimbabwe. Having dedicated time for reflection and writing will be a true gift.

While I am away, my responsibilities will be covered by our Associate Conference Minster, the Reverend Sara Marean, and Bridge Conference Minister, the Reverend Campbell Lovett. Sara will be picking up much of the Search and Call part of my portfolio as she already has relational connections with all of our churches. Campbell will be handling the executive function part of my responsibilities and staff the Committees for Church and Ministry that I normally staff. The Bridge Conference Minister position will be a 20 hour per week position.

For those who are not familiar with Reverend Lovett, he has previously served as Conference Minister of the Michigan Conference and Transitional Conference Minister in the South Central Conference. More recently, Campbell served as the Interim Pastor at the Congregational Church of Laconia.

Friends, I covet your prayers as I prepare for this blessed time of travel and renewal.

Movies and Film Edition

Step into a your church: Sunday School lights up with giggles as Veggie Tales play on the screen, or Family Movie Night in the social hall offers cozy moments with popcorn and beloved dramas. But here’s something you might not know: to show movies in church, you need a license. (And no OneLicense does NOT count, and CCLI likely doesn't unless it's material you got from them.) It's a Justice issue. Behind every movie is the hard work and creativity of its makers, who deserve fair compensation. Take a look at this article to see more about obtaining a license to screen a feature film in your church, building the kin-dom in community within the bounds of the law and upholding justice for artists and creators.

Clergy Convocation

Reclaiming our Call: Living into New Contours in a Post Pandemic Era

On September 16-18 at the Pilgrim Pines Camp and Retreat Center in Swanzey, NH, Clergy Convocation will be a time to gather with colleagues and reflect together on the changing nature and experience of “being called”-

How has this changed (or not) for us over time?

How have we been surprised and disappointed?

Together, how do we foster staying power- choosing to engage in ministry and life with joy and resilience?

We are grateful to have Leanne Tigert is our presenter for this event. Leanne has been engaged in active ministry in various setting for 40 years, and is now semi- retired. She has served in parish ministry, as seminary adjunct faculty, on national committees, as a pastoral psychotherapist, as author/ co- author of several books, and facilitator of the conference MID PLDG group. These days she can be found playing music in Celtic circles, on hiking trails, and playing with her grandchildren. Registration opens TODAY in less than an hour from when you received this email. A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING FOR JUNETEENTH

We give thanks to God

for freedom and emancipation of the enslaved people.

God heard the voices and supplications of enslaved people

those enslaved beyond Emancipation Day in 1863

cheated of their lives and livelihood by oppressors

beyond the pale of human rights and dignity.

From the shacks and plantations of Texas they cried:

“God, we pray, save our children!”

The snares of death encompassed them in the places

where they were held captive and used as commodity

God inclined his ear to them delivering them

from the distress and anguish of this living hell.

From the shacks and plantations of Texas they cried:

“God, we pray, save our lives!”

Because of their skin they were deemed less than farm animals

these African and African American people made in the image of the Divine

therefore they called on God all day long

praying to God to loosen their chains.

From the shacks and plantations of Texas they cried:

“God, we pray, keep us from harm and danger!”

We will pay our vows to God

in the presence of all people

we give thanks and praise to God

for the full emancipation for these human beings.

From the shacks and plantations of Texas they sang:

“God, we thank you for saving our lives.”

“All persons henceforth shall be free”

were the words spoken in 1863

today we reinforce with thanksgiving

God’s life, love and liberty.

From the depths of our hearts we cry:

“God, we thank you for deliverance.”

Living Psalm for Pentecost 3A (Juneteenth) – Psalm 116:1-4, 12-19 was written by Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson.
