St. Michael's Serves in the Community

St. Michael’s Annual Diaper Drive

Our 7th annual Mother’s Day Diaper Drive benefitting the clients at River City Food Bank will run until Father's Day, Sunday, June 16. Last year we supplied over 13,500 diapers to River City Food Bank, yet they still disappeared in a blink of an eye. We are challenging neighboring churches and communities to join us in this year's collections so we can work to double this number! We are grateful for any and all support.

There are a couple ways to support this outreach ministry if you choose to. You can contribute financially by dropping off or mailing a check to St. Michael’s (adding Diapers to the memo line) or making a donation online toward the Diaper Drive using the button below. Or, a St. Michael's favorite, bringing in box(es) of diapers (sizes 3 - 5 are especially in demand by the RCFB clients) to the St. Michael’s office on Sundays and throughout the week during office hours. Thank you for your continued support!

Contemplative Prison Fellowship

Sunday, June 23, 2024 |12:00 – 1:30 | Friendship Hall

You are invited to attend a presentation on the contemplative ministry that supports and guides Folsom Prison inmates in the practice of Centering Prayer. This ministry was initiated by a group of inmates over twenty years ago who desired a deeper relationship with God through the practice of contemplative meditation. Their actions resulted in the eventual creation of a prayer group known as the Prison Contemplative Fellowship, and the ministry that supports it. A ministry that aligns with the principles and guidelines provided by Contemplative Outreach LTD, an organization cofounded by Father Thomas Keating....

We in this ministry are inspired by the words of Jesus “I was in prison, and you came to me”. Matthew 25:36; “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” Matthew 25:40.

You are cordially invited:

EfM Graduation at Trinity Cathedral

Thursday, May 30th at 7pm

Come and honor St. Michael’s EFM group's graduates Tammy Murray and Martie Goodson-Scott.

If you are thinking of joining EfM and want to know something about it, going to the graduation that celebrates the members who completed the four years of study is an excellent way to do that.

One of the graduates preaches during the service and shares about the program and the effect the study had on his, her, or their life. EfM takes time and for the graduates, is genuinely believed to be worth it. People talk about the community created among the students a lot! So, if you want to get involved in a community at St. Michael's, think seriously about joining EfM.

Education for Ministry (EfM) - Now taking enrollment

EfM is a program of theological study provided by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. The study is done in a seminar class which meets once a week throughout the academic year, about 36 weeks, under the guidance of trained mentors.

This is a small “community” of learners studying together. Although the course materials provide substantial academic content, the focus is on life as ministry and understanding what that ministry may be. The first two years focus on the Old and New Testament, the third year on church history and the fourth year on ethics and philosophy.

EfM teaches how to think theologically and deepens faith and understanding of our Christian heritage. The bonds formed in this small learning community will be deep and long lasting. The program is non-denominational and St. Michael’s class is open to members of other Christian communities. We are now recruiting for the 2024-2025 academic year.

If you would like more information about the Graduation or enrolling, please contact Janice Bowdler,, or Ellen Cehand, Financial assistance is available.

Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjielo

The Offertory Anthem we have done for Pentecost the last few years, "The Ground" by Norwegian composer Ola Gjielo, is taken from his Sunrise Mass. Gjeilo was born on May 5, 1978, to Inge and Anne-May Gjeilo, and grew up in Skui, Norway. He began playing piano and composing when he was five years old and learned to read music when he was seven years old. Gjeilo studied classical composition with Wolfgang Plagge. In his undergraduate career, Gjeilo studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1999–2001), transferred to the Juilliard School (2001), and studied at the Royal College of Music, London (2002–2004) to receive a bachelor's degree in composition. He continued his education at Juilliard (2004–06) where he received his master's degree in 2006, also in composition. From 2009–10, Gjeilo was composer-in-residence for Phoenix Chorale.

He currently resides in Manhattan, working as a freelance composer.

Here is a beautiful live 2019 recording from Rome (The Ground starts at 32:50):
