St. Michael's Serves in the Community

St. Michael’s Annual Diaper Drive

Begins this Sunday, May 12

Mark your calendar! Our 7th annual Mother’s Day Diaper Drive benefitting the clients at River City Food Bank will run from Sunday, May 12 – Sunday, June 16. Last year we supplied over 13,500 diapers to River City Food Bank, yet they still disappeared in a blink of an eye. This year we are challenging neighboring churches and communities to join us in this year's collections so we can work to double this number! We are grateful for any and all support.

There are a couple ways to support this outreach ministry if you choose to. You can contribute financially by dropping off or mailing a check to St. Michael’s (adding Diapers to the memo line) or making a donation online toward the Diaper Drive using the button below. Or, a St. Michael's favorite, bringing in box(es) of diapers (sizes 3 - 5 are especially in demand by the RCFB clients) to the St. Michael’s office on Sundays and throughout the week during office hours. Thank you for your continued support!

Help Feed the Food Barrel!

Have you noticed the Food Barrel in the Narthex? It is for donations of non-perishable food items which are taken to River City Food Bank by Harriette and Jack Carr (Thank you!). In addition to all the families that RCFB serves, they have many clients that do not have the ability to prepare food, many of which are homeless. Items that do not need any preparation are ideal to donate in the food barrel giving RCFB an opportunity to give something healthy to all their clients. We hope you take this opportunity to join us in Feeding the Food Barrel!

Additional Outreach opportunities can be found on our website calendar linked below!

St. Michael's Strategic Plan

Last year the vestry worked with the congregation to develop a plan for the next two years. Because we are in a big transition, Rev. Mary is retiring June 30th and the beginning process of the search for new rector has begun, we are publishing that plan online so you all can see it and look for areas you may feel called to participate in. The Vestry, the world café participants, and those who worked on the objectives are to be commended on a great plan that is very comprehensive. I hope we all find ways to participate in the action of the plan, especially life-giving ways that can grow all our faith and trust in God.

P.S. This plan is meant to be a flexible, working document - not something set in stone.

Check out volunteer opportunities in worship

This summer is a great opportunity for you to serve in a new - to you - lay ministry. We need volunteers in the following ministries:  Greeters, Ushers, and Altar Guild.  If you are friendly and are willing to come 20-30 minutes before the service, please consider greeting - contact Mary Ellen Ferguson with your interest.  If you are interested in directing and assisting those in worship, please consider ushering - contact Jay Bowdler with your interest.  If the background/support work appeals to you and you enjoy your time in the sanctuary, plus you like working as part of a team, please consider Altar Guild and contact Laura Quene with your interest. We believe in equal opportunities for all our members!

Piano Meditation

by John Cozza, Music Director

 Brahms--Intermezzo in E-flat, Op. 117/i

Sharing the May 7 birthday of last week's composer Tchaikovsky is the German/adopted Austrian composer Johannes Brahms. Here is one of my very favorite works for piano, written in a burst of creative energy after Brahms had unofficially "retired" from composition, along with the other short gems of Op. 116-119. Composed in 1892-3 in the last years of Brahms' life, these pieces are infused with a lonely sense of deep introspection. Above the score of this Intermezzo Brahms placed these words of the poet Herder's Scottish Folk Songs: "Sleep softly my child, sleep softly and beautifully. It grieves me so to see you weep."
