The Rev. Mary Claugus

Sunday March 24, 2024

Alleluia! Christ has Risen. The Lord has Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

I want to wish you all a very happy Easter and I hope it is filled with resurrection, love, grace, joy and chocolate!

Here is a poem I would like to share with you. It is a product of our wonderful spiritual writing class taught by Marilyn McEntyre during our Lent preparations.

Faithfully and with love, Rev. Mary

Everyday begins with the sun rising in the east …

we are Awakened to the Dawn of a New Day

                       filled with Possibilities

                                   if we can let it.

Things go right

and things go wrong.

Even so,

each day the sun Rises

and each day the sun Sets.

At its setting – we put it away – the day.

Deep in us – somewhere – we

understand that we finished

something.

           Let it go

                       REST, says GOD

                                   and let yourself be made

New

again and again and again and again

every

Day.

Prune the vines of dead branches

           Make              way

                       for energy to come

                                   to invigorate   you.

Be invigorated first

with HOPE

           then with LOVE

you will then have a new life.

For if we carry the Dead Weight with us

           there will be no room

                       for new.

TRUST in RESURRECTION

and it will come to you.

Let expectations of Good

                                   or Bad

Go                  and instead …

be ready to be

           surprised.

Be amazed that the dead lifeless bulb

surrounded by nothing – when placed in dirt – becomes

a tulip – bright and strong.

Be amazed that in letting an old friendship go – one that

died years ago – in its place a new one blooms

filled with wonder and possibilities.

Be amazed that when you let go of a worn out

           image of God

                       one that is …

                                   Vengeful Angry Mean

And in its place a

Loving Forgiving Wonderful Joyful

God               will

           move into your

                       heart and soon

your desire for

Vengeance Anger and meanness

Goes

Away.

Instead

You are filled with

LOVE

Forgiveness

Wonder

Joy

Resurrected into a new person

on a new day

into new life.

Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

St. John Passion, BWV 245 by Bach

With the Triduum just a few days away, here is a meditation for Good Friday. The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion (GermanJohannes-Passion), BWV 245, is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church.

The structure of the work falls in two halves, intended to flank a sermon. The anonymous libretto draws on existing works (notably Brockes') and is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of Johnariosos and arias reflecting on the action, and chorales using hymn tunes and texts familiar to a congregation of Bach's contemporaries.

St. Michael's Episcopal Day School News

St. Michael's Celebration of The Episcopal Day School's 60th Anniversary - Sunday, April 28th

We will celebrate our ministry with the Day school for the past 60 years. Our founding rector, The Rev. Thurlow Baker began the Day school shortly after St. Michael's became a parish of the Diocese of California. Over the past 60 years, it grew from a preschool to what it is today, a well respected Episcopal and Independent preschool through 8th grade School.

Mary Heise, the Head of School will join us, with the President of the Board of Trustees to share with us some highlights.

Come celebrate with us at Coffee Hour after the April 28th 10am service.
