Happy Independence Day!

The Church office will be closed on Thursday & Friday, July 4 & 5 in observance of Independence Day. We will be back in the office on Monday, July 8. We hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

We will not have a Weekly Messenger next week while Michelle is on vacation. She will be back in the office Monday, July 15th.

Rev. Mary’s Retirement Celebration

What a fabulous send off we gave her! And it wouldn't have been possible without the help of scores of people. Top of my list of invaluable people are Catherine Curran and Holly Yue, who co-chaired the event with me. Just as valuable were the barkeeps - John Quené, Jan and Jay Bowdler, and Cindy and Greg Dewey; the decorating committee - Jackie Linn, Sue Davis, and Molly Hoever; the food and dessert helpers - Dianne Robbins, Judy Kennedy, Michael Walker, Michael Johnson and Lonnie Struble; the cleanup crew - Susan Johnson, Lisa and Jim Sargent, Dawn and Tyson Wright, Jennine Quiring, and everyone who stacked chairs, cleared and stacked tables, and all those who pitched in wherever and whenever they were needed - Andy Chamness, Kate Muris, Laura Quené, Renée Pierce, Mike Curran, Dorothy Eddings, Gail and Bob McMichael, Brian Davis and the entire Holeman Family.

We also want to thank Emigh Hardware for the donation of the plants and Jim and Pat Cole for the bamboo fencing.

The event would not have been complete without the wonderful program. Many thanks to the choir, the senior wardens of the last eleven years, Father Rod, Bishop Meghan, Eileen Thomas, Rick Larkey, our fabulous MC, Todd Murray and of course, our faithful videographer, Jack Cozza!

I am sure I have forgotten someone and I apologize. Please forgive me and know that you were appreciated.

We Can Make a Big Difference for Starr King K-8

School is out for the summer. Hopefully, that triggers many of us to start keeping an eye out for the summer backpack sales. Our partner school, Starr King K-8, greatly appreciates the assistance we have given their students over many years. Last year we collected and donated over 120 new backpacks. Other items that are needed are large containers of hand sanitizer, large boxes of Kleenex, and baby wipes. These items can be dropped off at church on Sunday or in the church office during the week.

You can also make a donation in cash, check or online using the button below. For cash and check donations, please make it out to St. Michaels and indicate on the memo line for Starr King. We will then shop the sales for additional school supplies which they request. Remember, a little done by a lot of us can make a huge difference to many young lives at Starr King K-8. Thank you so much! We will collect them all summer, bless them on August 11th and drop them off the first week of school. Many thanks!

Baptismal Font

Dear People of St. Michael’s parish. You may notice that the baptismal font has a new home. It will now be at the entry to the church with Holy Water. Placing the baptismal font as you enter the church is an ancient tradition. As you enter the church the font reminds us of our baptism.

It also makes a statement that we have not come to meet with just any random “god” or “divine being” but the one true God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who has made you heirs with Christ by virtue of your baptismal adoption. Please feel free to dip your fingers in the blessed water and bless yourself.

Choral Masterworks

by John Cozza, Music Director

Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland

In honor of the 4th of July: Copland's Lincoln Portrait is not exactly a "choral" masterpiece, but Lincoln's words are always inspiring and seem especially appropriate at this time of year. Conductor Andre Kostelanetz commissioned Copland to write a musical portrait of an "eminent American" for the New York Philharmonic. Copland chose President Abraham Lincoln, and used material from speeches and letters of Lincoln, as well as original folk songs of the period, including "Camptown Races" and "On Springfield Mountain". Copland finished Lincoln Portrait in April 1942.

And here is a wonderful live performance from London from 1976 with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein, with one of the great American singers of the 20th Century, bass-baritone William Warfield, narrating:
