"The Stillness of the Chrysalis"
|
|
Following a summer of Sundays exploring "The Bigger Story," this Sunday we recognize the Biggest Story of all, the story of change, the story of transformation, the story of evolution. It’s a story that applies to living organisms, to communities, and even to patterns of worship. Dr. Glen Thomas Rideout and Rev. Kate Tucker will invite us into that living, breathing Pause that dwells between what was (the No Longer) and what is yet to be (the Not Yet).

"The Perfect Leader" (8/7)
How do we become the perfect leader? Is flawless leadership even obtainable for imperfect humans? Should we aspire for perfection or strive towards growth and learning in our leadership? Join us this Sunday for a worship service that includes a homily by Satya Mamdani and a story told by Rev. Arif Mamdani that consider these questions and more within the context of our Unitarian Universalist faith. Watch the recording here. Or, listen to the podcast.

Our hearts are with Kathy Coskran and her family as they mourn the loss of her amazing brother Jeffrey Johnson who died on July 24 of lung cancer. He was 75.
We celebrate with Emma Paskewitz and her fiancé Ben on the news that they are expecting a baby in December. Some of you might have questions about what this means for Emma’s role with RE, and we’ll let you know about that in the next few weeks, and right now, let’s join our hearts to theirs in joy and celebration.
We lift up Stacy Kaditus, wife Ricki and baby Juniper after Juniper’s successful surgery on Friday. As they start on their road to post-surgery recovery, they appreciate our support, care, and messages of love and healing.
If you are experiencing a crisis or transition, celebrating a joy or marking a sorrow, please let us know. To be included in our Cycle of Life on Sunday in worship, or if you would like support, contact Rev. Arif Mamdani at arif@firstuniv.org or 612-825-1701.

Celebrating Rev. Jen Crow’s "Can Do Spirit"
|
|
By Chuck Coskran
Jen said, "We can do this.”
A lot of us, church leaders and congregants, weren't so sure, because "this" was raising $60,000 to be the main benefactor of a Habitat for Humanity home. We'd been doing single Habitat work days for the previous 4 years, and had increased that commitment to a work week every summer, but it would cost $60,000 for First Universalist to be the main benefactor. Maybe too much.
"We can do this," Jen said.
Her previous congregation had challenged members to divert part of what they would spend in the annual Christmas rush to buy more “stuff” to a worthy project in their community. Habitat for Humanity was an obvious choice for First Universalist. Church members had been volunteering with Habitat since 2010; we had started with a single work day, and our commitment had deepened to a series of work days, and a work week each year. But $60,000!
Some Board members worried we were obligating ourselves to produce $60,000. Other leaders were concerned that a spectacular, visible, failure could set back the entire church commitment to social justice.
"We can do this, we can do this” Jen said.
And so we did.
But we didn’t raise $60,000. We raised almost $120,000 and fully paid for The House That Love Built.
Thank you, Jen. We did it!

|
|
Sunday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m.
Lake Harriet Bandshell
Join us for an energizing worship service and potluck picnic at the Lake Harriet Bandshell on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m.! Our Lake Harriet Sunday is an annual summer highlight that both members and the general public are encouraged to attend. We’ll enjoy music, an inspiring message, and the return (after a two year hiatus) of the potluck picnic afterwards!
The service will be held rain or shine (except in the case of severe weather). Sunglasses and/or hats are recommended for your comfort.
For the potluck picnic, please bring a dish and/or beverage to share, chairs or blankets to sit on, and plates, cups and eating utensils for everyone in your party. The picnic will take place on the park hill across the street from the bandshell following the worship service (just after 11 a.m.).
There is limited free parking near the bandshell. Parking pay stations and meters are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
This is part of an annual outdoor worship series at the Lake Harriet bandshell with about 15 neighborhood congregations participating.
Please note: this will be our only worship service on Sunday, Aug. 21 – there will not be a service at 3400 Dupont on this day, and the service will not be live-streamed. A recording of the service will be available on our YouTube channel by Tuesday, Aug. 23.
