Congressional Corner

The Senate is in session this week. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in San Carlos Apache Tribe v. Becerra, Congressional offices on the relevant appropriations and authorizing committees are working to understand the impact of the ruling. HHS Secretary, Xavier Becerra, and IHS Director, Roselyn Tso, both released statements acknowledging the Court’s decision. NIHB filed a friend of the court brief in the case. NIHB is will be hosting an All Tribes Call on the Supreme Court decision and its impacts on the IHS budget on Thursday, June 20 at 1:30 pm EDT; you can register for the call here.

Congress is also using its oversight authority to emphasize the growing crisis on syphilis and congenital syphilis. Over the weekend, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, led a Congressional Letter to the HHS Secretary on the syphilis crisis and urged the adoption of a national Public Health Emergency.

When the House returns next week, the House Appropriations Committee will take up the FY 25 Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill on June 27th and the FY 25 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies appropriations bill on June 28th.
