Had a great time at Middle School Conference!

Our Guest Preacher Sunday, July 28

We are so grateful and excited the Rev. Leigh Anne Armstrong will be the guest preacher this Sunday! Rev. Leigh Anne Armstrong is a longtime Auburn resident and member of Auburn First Baptist Church. She recently graduated from Baptist Seminary of Kentucky, having earned the Master of Divinity with a concentration in Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy and completing her CPE clinicals at East Alabama Medical Center. She is a writer, private music teacher, and supply preacher, volunteer in chaplaincy settings, and listening for the Spirit’s whisper. Leigh Anne is a friend of the FPC congregation, and is overjoyed to worship among us this Sunday!

Hope Is Topic of Leith Lectures in August

Rev. MaryAnn McKibben Dana will bring her message about hope as our Leith Lecturer on August 17-18.

A graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary, Dana is a pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Herndon, Va., and a writer, speaker, and life coach.

Her messages will be based on Hope: A User’s Manual (William B. Eerdmans, 2022), which has been the focus of three book study groups here this summer. This passage from the book will serve as a preview of what we can look forward to.

--Terry Ley

When we say we’re hopeful, we often follow it with a “that.”

I’m hopeful that the chemo will work

I’m hopeful that I’ll find a job soon.

I’m hopeful that the new meds will help curb the depression.

There’s nothing wrong with hope that points in a particular direction. But when the world is falling apart, it can be hard to find a suitable “that” to complete the sentence. I have a friend who’s worked on climate change on the local level for many years. Her organization has made clear but modest progress on a number of small initiatives. But she doesn’t feel any hope that humans will act quickly and broadly enough to stem the tide of the catastrophe that’s coming.

What then? Can we still have hope if the facts argue against it? How? Is hope possible even if we aren’t attached to a particular outcome? (p. 8)
