Dear Neighbor,

Waste not, want not! Minimizing waste reduces pollution, saves valuable resources, mitigates climate change, and improves public health. Fairfax County is exploring options for achieving near zero waste as part of our Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s requirement that the County develop an updated solid waste management plan.

Currently, we recycle, compost, or reuse nearly 44% of the 23,000 tons of waste produced each week in Fairfax County. The rest is incinerated and converted to energy or landfilled.

CECAP set an ambitious 90% waste diversion goal, which will require new waste reduction strategies. Strategies being considered include:

  • A County-managed waste service model or a unified sanitation district. This would involve the County managing waste collection contracts with private haulers, rather than asking residents or homeowners associations to negotiate those contracts on their own.
  • “Pay as you throw“ system, where residents would be charged a variable price for waste collection based on the amount of waste produced per household. This cost could be charged by weight or size of the trash bags or size of trash containers.
  • Mandatory food scrap recycling, which would require each household to use a special bin for food waste collection.
  • Comprehensive commercial and multi-family property waste collection programs.

Feedback from the community is key to helping us select the right strategies. Residents have from now until September 30 to share their opinions on this issue. You can find the survey on the County website.

First Day of School

On Monday, Fairfax County Public Schools will welcome back thousands of students to kick off the school year! I want to wish every Fairfax County student, family, and staff member a successful school year.

Please prepare for more traffic and be patient with school buses and student drivers on the roads. The County’s Department of Emergency Management and Security (DEMS) offers a few safety reminders for the first week back to classes:

  • Stop and wait for school buses to safely load and unload children
  • Slow down and take extra care in school zones and in neighborhoods
  • Make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians at stoplights and intersections before proceeding
  • Make sure children know who to call in case of an emergency, their home address, and a parent/guardian’s phone number

Senior Olympics

The 2024 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) will take place September 14-29. If you're interested in participating in the NVSO, are 50 years old or older, and live in the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church, or Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun or Prince William Counties, register by August 29.

For more information, including events, fees and locations, or to register, visit their website.

Apply for FMAP Funding

County residents, property owners, common interest communities (CIC) and places of worship may now be eligible for financial assistance with their floodproofing and mitigation efforts through the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMAP).

The program took effect on July 1, through a partnership between the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD). Due to climate change, the county can expect an increase in heavy rainfall events that surpass the capacity of the stormwater management system, which will lead to more flooding. FMAP will be an invaluable resource to many who need assistance to protect their property.

Those who meet eligibility requirements may be reimbursed for 50% of the purchase and installation costs of approved flood reduction practices, up to $5,000 per property. Commercial properties are ineligible for the grant, as are residential properties in the towns of Vienna and Herndon.

Read more about the program on DPWES' website.
