Dear Neighbor,

The 2024 Summer Olympics begin tomorrow and I'm excited to support Team USA – especially the athletes from Fairfax County!

Data Center Zoning Ordinance Amendment

Last week, the Board held a public hearing regarding proposed changes to our zoning ordinance related to data centers. The changes seek to, among other things:

  • Limit the size of data centers and where they can be built "by right" or without explicit Board of Supervisors approval.
  • Require noise studies and noise mitigation to ensure compliance with our existing Noise Ordinance.
  • Impose design standards to improve the aesthetics of data centers.
  • Require screening/enclosure of equipment such as HVAC units and generators.
  • Ensure appropriate distance or "setbacks" from residential neighborhoods.

Virginia law limits the issues that can be addressed through the Zoning Ordinance, and additional considerations such as energy use and efficiency will be the focus of ongoing work to update the Policy Plan in our Comprehensive Plan. No matter the outcome of this change to our Zoning Ordinance, Fairfax County is likely to see a relatively modest number of data centers. Loudoun County, for example, currently has 30 million square feet of operating data centers while Fairfax County has less than 3 million square feet.

After hearing from more than 60 speakers with a wide range of opinions, we voted to defer until July 30 the vote on the ordinance to give the Board time to absorb the testimony we heard and consider changes to the Staff and Planning Commission recommendations.

County staff's reports on this topic from January 9 and May 17 provide detailed analysis of data centers' impact and recommended policy changes.

Additional information and recordings of past community meetings are available on the Data Centers webpage.

FCPD in the Community and Beyond!

FCPD at the Olympics

Fairfax County Police Department is proud to announce their participation in providing key security at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

As one of only four U.S. police departments asked to assist, FCPD has sent 12 officers and an explosive detection canine to assist the French National Police in protecting the athletes, spectators, and Olympic staff at the Games.

This prestigious opportunity reaffirms FCPD’s role as one of the most prominent police departments in the nation. You can read more about this unique opportunity to serve the greater community on FCPD's blog.

National Night Out

The deadline to register for National Night Out is tomorrow, July 26.

*Only neighborhood associations can register events, not individual citizens.

The 2024 National Night Out is Tuesday, August 6. Fairfax County is the safest jurisdiction of its size in the nation because of the strong bonds between our neighborhoods and our Police Department, and you can help us keep it that way.

Help make this year's a memorable event by organizing an event in your neighborhood and inviting police officers and other public safety personnel to stop by. Whether it’s a simple ice cream party or an all-out festival, National Night Out is an opportunity to gather with your neighbors, get better acquainted, and talk about issues of common concern.

For questions about National Night Out, contact your police district's crime prevention officer. The Braddock District is served by three police districts:

  • West Springfield District
  • MPO Tony Capizzi - (703) 277-2363
  • Franconia District
  • PFC Sean Corcoran - (703) 277-2476
  • Fair Oaks District
  • MPO Richard Genus - (703) 352-2163

Wakefield Tennis and Pickleball Redevelopment Project

vkjiigyyqwapc8qr3xzs_1336_1200 image

The Fairfax County Park Authority held a virtual community meeting earlier this month to present a proposal to better accommodate both pickleball and tennis players at Wakefield Park, as well as receive comments and questions from the community.

To more fully benefit both the pickleball and tennis communities at Wakefield Park, the Park Authority is proposed replacing tennis court 11, presently in need of repair, with four dedicated pickleball courts and return courts 9 and 10 to tennis only. The work would result in a total of six dedicated pickleball courts and ten dedicated tennis courts at the site. It is anticipated that this work could be completed by Fall 2024.

A second phase of the proposal would add two more dedicated pickleball courts in place of one of the existing tennis practice wall areas. The tennis practice wall area closest to courts 9 and 10 would remain. This phase of the project would require additional site work, including building a retaining wall and relocating the picnic tables. It is estimated that it could potentially be completed by spring 2025.

A 30-day public comment period ends on August 8. Members of the community can submit comments online through the comment form which is hosted on the project website. You can view the presentation from the July 9 meeting and a recording on YouTube.

Wakefield Park is home to nine tennis courts, two dual-use courts (two tennis courts or four pickleball courts), and two dedicated pickleball courts. The Fairfax County Park Authority reports that, over time, the use of the dual-use courts has trended strongly towards pickleball and created fewer tennis opportunities.

Share Your Thoughts about the Fairfax Center Area Study

2013-III-FC1_PARCEL_MAP image

Fairfax County wants your input on the future of the Fairfax Center Area! Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts in their online poll.

The Fairfax Center Area Study is evaluating changes to the long-range land use plan for the 5,500-acre area between Route 50 and Route 29. The study will refine recommendations for the Fairfax Center Area’s Core, including the County’s Government Center, Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax Corner, and other commercial and residential developments, and focuses on creating a mixed-use, walkable, and vibrant community. The study will include a transportation analysis and consider updates to accommodate existing and future developments.

The Government Center visioning process is another critical component of this study. Developed nearly 40 years ago, the Government Center campus’ role and its surrounding area are being re-evaluated in light of modern needs and policies, including the Countywide Strategic Plan and the One Fairfax equity policy.

Community feedback is crucial to create a thriving, inclusive, and well-planned Fairfax Center Area. All who live, work, shop, recreate, or do business in the Fairfax Center area are encouraged to share their thoughts through the online poll, before it closes on Friday, July 26. The responses will help the study’s Task Force form recommendations for how the area can evolve in the years to come.

Ongoing updates and future engagement opportunities will be available on the project webpage. Updates will continue to be shared with subscribers of this Comprehensive Plan Amendment's e-mail list.

Heat Safety Tips

This summer, it is critical to be prepared and take the necessary precautions to stay safe in the heat.

  • Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages
  • Limit outdoor activities - take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Dress Appropriately - Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool.
  • Check on elderly or vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as temperatures can quickly become dangerously hot inside.

Here are additional resources for heat tips, weather preparedness, and precautions for extreme heat:

When the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory, excessive heat watch, or excessive heat warning, the County activates its Extreme Heat Response Plan, which is geared towards protecting all members of our community.

County efforts include:

  • Offering space for residents to cool off in air-conditioned areas with water available along with other heat-related supplies.
  • Spaces available include all libraries, Rec Centers, community centers, and human services buildings during operating hours.
  • Deploying homeless services outreach staff to check on unsheltered residents and provide them with supplies.

Since last year, the County has doubled the amount of heat supplies and bus passes provided to homeless services providers. Supplies have been distributed and are available at the emergency shelters, consumer wellness/day support sites, and meal sites.

Subscribe to Fairfax Alerts for extreme weather alerts and warnings. The County has made it easier for unsheltered residents to sign up for Fairfax Alerts by texting 'FFXOPEH' to 888-777.
