NORTHERN REGIONAL CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING
Your Disability Rights and Resource Center
The services that NRCIL provides are all aimed at assisting those with disabilities to live in integrated communities with supports. FTNYS assists NRCIL with those supports by providing training to NRCILs Advocates and Supervisors. Below is a write-up from NRCIL about that training.
Northern Regional Center for Independent Living (NRCIL) is proud to recommit to the Family Assessment of Needs and Strengths (FANS). As leaders of the Family Support teams at NRCIL, Jennifer Sibley and Karen Boliver understand the importance of an assessment tool that provides for the family voice to be heard. The FANS tool is an important part of the engagement and empowerment piece that a Family Peer Advocate (FPA) utilizes when meeting with a family to understand and set goals with the family to meet needs.
On October 26, NRCIL’s Family Support Team from Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties gathered to host Nancy Craig, Director of Community and Systems Engagement and Parent Advisor Liaison for Families Together in New York State. We gathered for a one day training to assist our FPA’s to recommit to the FANS tool. Prepared with questions and experiences unique to our North Country families, our teams of FPA’s were able to utilize our time with Nancy to discuss the best way to utilize the FANS tool. We are energized to work with families and assist them to develop meaningful goals and treatment plans. Our team walked away from this valuable training with a renewed commitment to utilize the FANS tool to help families achieve their goals and become fully empowered to be the best versions of themselves that they can be and remove any barriers to success.
Since our time with Nancy, we have increased the number of completed FANS assessments and most importantly, our FPAs have increased their confidence in helping families establish and accomplish their goals with measurable outcomes. We would like to thank Nancy Craig, as well as our Central New York Parent Advisors Kathleen Liedka and Susan Lewis, for sharing their time, knowledge and expertise with us.

As New York State welcomes refugees from Afghanistan, it is critical that New York’s mental health providers are aware of the circumstances that recent refugees are likely to be affected by, and best practice approaches to serving them. New York State’s Office of Mental Health has created the attached resources for mental health providers and refugees themselves, to provide needed information about accessing high quality mental health resources and supports.
