By the time that you read this, those of you who are working in educational settings, some 500 of you, have returned to work. We are facing the end of summer - regardless of what the weather feels like - and we are all working for the health and improvement of our chapters. For those of us who have spent our lives in education, September is a time of hopes and goals and a chance to begin again.
Whether you are facing the challenges within education settings of children who are living in turmoil and presenting challenges in school, preparing students to successfully face their various benchmarks, or positioning students for success in college, the military, or being employed in the workforce, it is important that you know that your Delta Kappa Gamma sisters are supporting you. Those of us providing that support can do so by remaining optimistic about education and the challenges that our teachers and students face. All of us are key women educators and our responsibility is to empact education.
Let us find those things that increase our positive mindset. It may be through noting gratitudes each day, journaling, exercise, meditation or purposeful acts of kindness. As we increase our positive approach to life, we are better able to achieve purposeful changes in our lives, our classrooms, our chapters, and our communities. As we heard during the chapter leadership sessions, "We Can Do It!"
Remember To Dream - To Dare - To Do!

Chapter Presidents
This is a reminder that chapter presidents, or their representatives, are to attend the Executive Board Meeting on Saturday, October 20th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbus.  More announcements will be coming but it is important that chapters plan to be there.  There will be updated information, business to be voted on, and an opportunity for you to share your ideas and concerns.

The meeting will begin in the morning, will include lunch, and will conclude by mid-afternoon with some committee meetings following the Executive Board Meeting.

Alpha Delta State Educational Excellence Committee:
Providing assistance to children in Ohio's Foster Care System (EEC Goals 1,2,3)

Margaret found this online for this issue on the state project. It is a response from a foster child in Oklahoma when asked what he was looking for in a family. What we consider to be ordinary family life, he has written as a request.

Marilyn Slusser, Past State President and member of Delta Kappa Chapter, Dayton area, presented a beautiful tribute in memory of Dr. Theresa Fechek at the International Convention Celebration of Life service. Dr. Fechek was the Executive Director of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for several years and received the International Achievement Award in 2002. Marilyn and Dr. Fecheck became friends when Theresa moved back to Ohio and transferred to the Delta Kappa Chapter. Marilyn's research, organization, and presentation created a wonderful tribute to a woman who cared so deeply about Delta Kappa Gamma. Apologies to Marilyn for overlooking this when listing those who contributed to the convention in the previous issue of
The Voice.

Beverly Babbert, President of Delta Theta Chapter, Grove City, is also president of The Board of Trustees with Visit Grove City, the Grove City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.  She is regularly seen throughout the area promoting travel and tourism in Grove City.  Way to go, Bev!
Alpha Mu Chapter, Carroll and Jefferson Counties, has purchased emergency bags for foster children and are filling the bags with personal care items.

Gamma Phi Chapter, Cincinnati area, has collected school supplies for children in foster care. They also helped to man a booth at a "Back to School Bash" sponsored by the Youth Advisory Board of Hamilton County Jobs & Family Services.
Beta Kappa Chapter, Sidney area, and Gamma Phi Chapter are publishing monthly newsletters this year and both chapters have a Facebook page. Congratulations on your communication efforts!

Dear ADS Membership Team,
In the fall, our chapter has a member who will be moving to another area. She genuinely wants to keep her membership with us. Is that possible or must she transfer her membership to a chapter in her new location? We would appreciate clarification about what she needs to do.
Please help...
A Confused Chapter Officer
Dear Confused,
Excellent question! Be assured other chapters have had similar questions in regard to transferring memberships. After consulting the DKG Go-to-Guide on Reserve membership and the Transfer Process (pages 17 and 19) may want to do the same for future reference...we concluded:
  • When a member moves to another area she may determine the chapter where her membership will reside.
  • A moving member is not required to change her chapter membership and may retain her membership in her current chapter. The current chapter, in turn, will determine whether or not to grant reserve status to this member.
  • Even though her membership resides with a chapter elsewhere she may also chose to attend meetings of a chapter in her new area and may certainly attend State Conventions, DKG conferences and conventions.
  • If, at a later date, the member decides to transfer her membership to a chapter in the new area, she will no longer be a member of her original chapter as DKG members can only maintain membership in one chapter at a time.
Warmest Regards,
The Alpha Delta State Membership Committee:

ADSOEF Scholarship/Grant Committee Update
The 4th of July fireworks have faded, the back-to-school ads have popped up, and many schools are in session. We salute all educators who have turned their attention to the 2018-19 school year. As you plan, if furthering your education is on the agenda, check out our website for scholarship opportunities!  Great ideas for the classroom this year? Shh!
We will let you in on a secret...a major announcement is in the works -
so stay tuned!
Hope your year is fabulous!

The ADSOEF Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that we have received an A. Margaret Boyd Fellowship recipient for the 2018-2019 school year. Devaahyam Nominchimeg of Mongolia will be studying at Kent State University. She will be pursuing her Master's degree in International Education. At the present time, we have no further information, however chapters can be thinking of ways in which Ohio members can welcome Ms. Nominchimeg into our Society. Also, please remember she is welcome to attend chapter meetings, but transportation and meal expenses are a chapter expense. Watch for more information in the October
Voice of Alpha Delta State and the fall Executive Board Meeting.

New Name - Same Goal

Publicity?  Marketing?  Are they the same thing?
You decide.

But, at the 2018 international convention,
a committee name change was approved:
Communications and Marketing Committee

The goal, however, is the same.
According to Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, marketing is defined as the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.

Publicity is defined as an act or device designed to attract public interest; the dissemination of information or promotional material.
The Ohio Committee is challenging each chapter to include marketing as part of their biennium's goals.   It is all about promoting!
Be sure to get the word out!

Fall is a sign of "Back to School" as well as the beginning of another exciting year of Ohio State Organization of DKG.  Chapters have installed their officer teams for the 2018-2020 biennium and the work has begun!
Creating an email account strictly for DKG business is strongly suggested.  The communications committee recommends using Google to so.

Setting up a gmail account is very simple, and there are so many advantages to using Google -- Google Docs and Google Sheets are helpful for chapter planning -- along with many other positives.
As you create this new email account, it is suggested to include your name AND your chapter name (or an abbreviation) for ease in distinction.  Remember to contact the appropriate persons with your email change!
Always remember, communication is a two-way street.
Happy Labor Day.

A chapter that dissolved returned these pieces of art work to the state organization this summer. The larger piece, 26.75 x 39.75", is beautifully appliqued with minute stitches. The gold key is 11 x 18.5" and also beautifully done. Either one or both is available to a chapter who would appreciate having and displaying them. The larger piece comes in its own fabric carrying case.

If you are interested in these pieces, please contact State President Meier Bauer, and plan to pick up your beautiful acquisition at the October Executive Board Meeting.

Did you know...that taking a FORMAL VOTE TO APPROVE THE MINUTES ISN'T NECESSARY?  Time can be saved by a parliamentary procedure named "Unanimous Consent?  [RONR (11th ed.) p. 54].

For example, the presider may ask:
"Are there any corrections to the minutes of ...?"

After any corrections are resolved, the presider could ask:
"Is there any objection to approving the minutes?"

After a pause (listening for an objection and hearing no objection), simply say:
"Hearing no objection, the minutes are approved."

[Unanimous consent is appropriate - even if -  someone offered a formal motion, i.e. to move the approval of the minutes.].
