NANB Revised Document

Standards of Practice for NPs

As the regulator for nurses in New Brunswick, NANB plays an important role in setting practice standards that support NPs to protect the safety of the public. The Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners defines safe, competent, compassionate, and ethical NP practice. They not only describe the fundamental legal responsibilities of NPs, but also identify their leadership, ethical, and societal obligations. Standards are updated approximately every five years to ensure that they align with changes in population health needs, nursing practice, and in healthcare. The NANB Board of Directors has approved the recent revision of the Standards of Practice for Nurses Practitioners at the May meeting!

The revised standards will come into effect July 1, 2024. It is a requirement for all NPs to understand the standards and apply them to their practice. To support the implementation of the revised NP standards, stay tuned for promotional blasts on social media (week of June 10), and upcoming Q&A sessions for NPs (last 2 weeks of June). NPs will receive an email invitation from NANB to register for these sessions.

We Asked, You Answered - Standards of Practice for NPs

The Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB) would like to thank all nurse practitioners (NPs) and stakeholders who took the time to provide feedback on the revision of the NP standards. The following FAQ provides answers to common questions asked during the external consultation: FAQ – Standards of Practice for NPs.

Why Employers Need to Check Registration Status

As a society, we occasionally worry about identity theft and fraudulent claims that may affect us. Often our concerns are related to financial pilfering that may cause distress in our daily lives. Rarely, do we think of identity theft and fraud as part of the healthcare world. Unfortunately, these concerns are part of the healthcare world, and not just in larger centers, but right here in New Brunswick.

As a regulator, NANB has numerous processes in place to mitigate the risk of fraudulent nurses in practice. So, as an employer, you may be asking, “how does this impact me? If the regulator is already checking, why is it so important for me to check?” More...

Registration...What You Need to Know?

NANB likes to keep registrants up to date with any changes to upcoming events as well as any health-related news that may impact the work of NANB registrants. Our direct method of communication is by email.

You can verify your contact information by logging into your “My Profile” found at www.nanb.ca in the top right corner. Please ensure you update any contact information changes by updating your NANB profile. If you require assistance, you may send an email to nanbregistration@nanb.nb.ca .

Specific to NPs: The Nurses Act section 10.5(5) and NANB Rules 1.26(b) and (c), require NP to have current employment information and a consultive and referral physician on file. This is a friendly reminder to complete your annual NP Consultation and Referral Statement if required.

NANB Resources

Fact Sheet-Volunteering as a Nurse

Are you planning to volunteer in a camp setting this summer? NANB’s Fact Sheet on Volunteering as a Nurse is intended for nurses who are considering engaging in a volunteer role such as camp nursing. It outlines the responsibilities and accountabilities of nurses in this role and provides helpful resources.

Supporting New Graduates and Students

Both students and new graduates are entering our highly stressed health system that is facing unprecedented challenges. Transitioning into the workforce is typically a significant challenge for new graduates because of their limited practice experience, the complexity of healthcare, and the ever-increasing acuity of patients. RNs and NPs are always accountable to support colleagues and students by sharing nursing knowledge and expertise and by acting as role models, preceptors and/or mentors. During this time, as with so many of our regular responsibilities, it is particularly important to support our future nurses. The following resources are available to help you support students and new graduates:
