Shop Local this Holiday Season

Why should you shop locally?

Money spent locally, stays local. By shopping in Highland Village, the sales tax you pay goes to fund your streets, your parks and trails and public safety.

Maintain your options and variety. Local and repeat customers are what keep businesses going. New or happenstance customers aren’t enough.

Competition and diversity lead to more choices. New and expanding businesses want to locate near competitors who perform well and have strong community support.

Supporting Highland Village businesses is supporting your neighbors. Many businesses in Highland Village are owned and operated by Highland Village residents.

One-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character.

Santa is Coming to Highland Village!

Overview of the Week's Route

Santa Claus is coming to town! Beginning Sunday, December 10 through Friday, December 15, Santa will be riding through the neighborhoods of Highland Village on the Fire Engine. Routes will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. and finish up around 8:30 p.m. each evening. Nightly route information will be published on the Fire Department Facebook site, the City of Highland Village website calendar and on the Overview of the Week's Route link here. Sirens, lights, and Christmas music will be a good indication that Santa is on your street. We ask that, if at all possible, you park vehicles in the driveway to help the Engine maneuver down your street. This is especially helpful if you live on a cul-de-sac. You can follow along on the Santa Tracker app.

Mayor Dan Jaworski would like to meet you at Coffee with the Mayor on Monday, December 4 at Sip |Stir Coffee House. This monthly event will allow you to ask Mayor Jaworski any questions you may have and share what is important to you.

Capital Improvement Projects

The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) is presented at the beginning of budget discussions to provide the framework for consideration of the current year’s budget and resulting tax rate. These projects are non-operational, “big ticket” items that typically require outside funding sources such as debt issuance, grant, or lease/purchase arrangements. Here are a few of the Capital Improvement Projects underway for 2023-2024, you can see the full list and the progress made at www.highlandvillage.org/CIP.

Traffic Signal and Roadway Improvements Highland Village Rd. / Brazos Blvd. – This project consists of upgrading the existing traffic signal at this location to current signal technology standards as well as ADA standards. The City works in conjunction with the City of Lewisville for the maintenance of the traffic signal. The City has awarded this project to a contractor and anticipates construction to begin early 2024. The project is transitioning to the construction phase. Traffic should expect minor traffic delays, lane closures and/or detours in the area as the project is constructed.

Highland Shores Boulevard Crosswalk at Community Center Dr. Project – This project consists of replacing the existing pedestrian crosswalk locate on Highland Shores Blvd. at Community Center Dr. The Improvements will include some drainage work, pavement replacement and a new crosswalk lighted notification system. The City has this project out to public bid. It is anticipated to be constructed in early 2024.

Highland Shores Blvd. Asphalt Overlay Project – The City has identified and funded a section of Highland Shores Blvd. to be overlaid with asphalt from the intersection of Briarhill to Highland Village Rd. The project consists of repairing the asphalt road failures, milling a portion of the old asphalt paving adding a section of bike lane on the east bound section of Highland Shores Blvd. at Highland Village Rd. and reconfiguring the lane striping to calm traffic flow in the area. The City opened bids for this project on Nov. 16th. It is anticipated to be constructed in early 2024.

Dredging the Quail Cove and Walmart Detention/Retention Facilities Project – The City identified two retention facilities in need of dredging, one located on Quail Cove in the Rolling Hills subdivision and one located north of the Walmart building on City property. The project consists of surveying the sites and comparing the survey data to the original record drawings, designing a dredging project to bring the 2 sites back to their original design capacities. The City secured an engineering firm to design the project.  It is anticipate to move into the construction phase, early 2024.

Water Line Replacement Project – The City’s Public Works Dept. identified the water main lines on Sandero Dr., Bexar Dr., Victoria Dr., and Malibu Dr. to be replaced prior to starting the street reconstruction project in this area. This project is currently under construction.  A portion of New water line has been installed on Sandero, Bexar and Victoria and placed into service. The Project is anticipated to be complete late Fall 2023.

Space Heater Safety

It’s cold in Texas and if you rely on portable heaters for supplemental heat, it is important to make safety a priority. Half of all home heating fires happen between December and February and are mostly caused by heaters placed too close to combustible materials.

  • Place the heater on a hard, level and nonflammable surface (not on a table)
  • Establish a 3 ft kid and pet free zone around the heater
  • Never place a heater in a child’s room
  • Keep the space heater at least 3 ft from combustible materials such as furniture, bedding, and curtains
  • Do not use a heater near paint, gas cans, or matches
  • Turn it off when you go to bed or leave the room
  • Do not use if the cord is damaged
  • Do not plug an extension cord or another electrical device in the same outlet as the heater
  • Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every bedroom and test them monthly

Stay safe and warm this winter by making sure you use portable heaters correctly.
