Deep Thoughts with the Dean

When I was in college, I changed my major six times. I started as a Secondary Education & History major. Then I student taught 7th & 8th grade Social Studies. It was humbling to discover that teachers are heroes but I was not a hero. Teaching in middle school wasn’t for me. Then I got really into the TV show CSI and thought I wanted to be a forensic psychologist. But the reality of that was less glamorous than TV depicted. So I explored some more. I tried things out. I reflected. I spoke with my Advisor a lot. And I went back to History and added Philosophy.

It felt right, but I never would have gotten there without the help and support from my amazing Advisor. If you’re feeling lost or confused, they can help. If what you started with doesn’t feel like the right fit anymore, they can help. If you are majoring in exactly what you want but you’re not sure if you should add a minor or take more language classes – they can help. Advisors, like teachers, are heroes. They help you discover the many different pathways you can take towards your future. Remember to reach out to them with questions, doubts, exciting developments, and interesting new ideas. They are here for you.

Civil Discourse Training

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

This interactive training will provide participants with skills to navigate challenging conversations, de-escalate conflict, and engage in relationship repair. This training will use tenants from the Sustained Dialogue Program which states, “Dialogue is the process of genuine interaction through which human beings listen to each other deeply enough to be change by what they learn. Each makes a serious effort to take the other’s concerns into their own picture, even when disagreement persists. No participant gives up their identity but each recognizes enough of the other’s valid human claims that they will act differently toward the other.”

Civil Discourse Training is intended to be restorative and engages participants using pair and shares, scenarios, and opportunities to practice engaging in Dialogue. All participants who complete the training will receive a certificate and be entered to win one of several gift cards. Civil Discourse Training is open to all CSU students.

Grab a Bite to Eat with President Bloomberg

In an effort to have more conversations on a regular basis, President Bloomberg will be hosting monthly meals with students. For each meal, she will invite a small group of students along with a staff member from the President’s Office. During these meals, she simply want to get a chance to learn about you, what brought you to CSU and what’s on your mind. Each group will consist of students from different academic programs and colleges. She wants you to have a chance to hear from students with experiences different from your own.

If you are interested in attending one of these meals, please click here to complete the interest form. Your name will be entered into a drawing to be invited at a later date. And to accommodate your schedule, President Bloomberg will be hosting meals at different times of the day. When you complete the form, please indicate which meals best fit your availability and class schedules.

We know you're doing amazing things. Share those amazing things with us so we can recognize you! Visit our Recognize Someone nomination form to nominate a friend/colleague for recognition from the Dean of Students Office.
