"Why Wouldn't You Apply"
Last week we blasted our social media platforms with four wonderful videos of our staff talking about their jobs supporting families and people with disabilities. These professionally created videos were produced by Joey Travolta and an incredible staff of film makers with disabilities. Watching these professionals work, paying close attention to every detail to help our staff portray their stories and perspectives about their work at VMRC, was so exciting and confirming about their capabilities as artists and employees. The other thing that stands out for me was the heart felt messages our staff expressed when talking about why they do their jobs and what would they would say to others interested in working in this field.

Brian will lead us through an interactive and experiential training intended to nurture providers’ core intentions that motivate us in our work with families, grow our reflective capacity for the purpose of connecting to wider circles of community and culture, and provide concrete ideas and information for working more effectively with Native American families.
The training should empower everyone to approach difficult discussions and situations with a humble perspective of understanding that not all groups of people feel loved in our society and we have much work to do to achieve this goal.
Learning Goals
· Describe an understanding of and knowledge about Native cultural upbringing, the experience of living in two worlds, and the challenges this brings to the perspective of an individual trying to stay culturally connected while becoming 'successful' in another world’s standards.
· Develop an understanding of all our implicit bias (including when it comes from our clients).
· Create an individual self-care plan rooted in humility and client-minded thinking while supporting the Native community.
· Identify new ideas for familiarizing yourself with tribal communities in your area.
|
Brian Williams, M.S., CEO and founder of Weaving Wellness & Diversity, is a Native American community leader from the Redwood Valley Little River Band of Pomo Indians, located in Redwood Valley, California. He has worked in child development and parent training situations for 20 years. He is driven to create understanding and perspective of the barriers to our Native American youth.
In addition, he strives to teach youth of any culture how best to navigate social dynamics in which their culture may not be heavily represented. Brian loves approaching all human beings as possible allies in making an inclusive community where we are all treated with love and respect.
The fee for this training is waived for participants in the Redwood Coast Regional Center catchment area of Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte counties through a partnership with the DDS Service Access & Equity Grant "Increasing Access to Early Start in Tribal Communities.” If this applies to you, please email IDA at mail@idaofcal.org and we will register you for free.

VMRC Recognizes & Celebrates
Lunar (Chinese) New Year 2023: The Year of the Rabbit
| |
|
The Lunar New Year is the pan-Asian festival that celebrates the beginning of the new year, based on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. Coinciding with ChineseNew Year, Lunar New Year is more inclusive phrase that includes both Chinese and other diverse cultures across
Asia and worldwide.
The festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival. Marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season, observances traditionally take place from New Year’s Eve, the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of the New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February.
The Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays, and has strongly influenced Lunar New Year celebrations of its 56 ethnic groups, such as the Losar of Tibet, and of China's neighbors, including the Korean New Year, and the Tết of Vietnam, as well as in Okinawa.
It is also celebrated worldwide in regions and countries that houses significant Overseas Chinese or Sinophone populations, especially in Southeast Asia. These include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore,Thailand, and Vietnam. It is also prominent beyond Asia, especially in Australia, Canada, Mauritius, New Zealand, Peru,South Africa, the United
Kingdom, and the United States, as well as various European countries.
Things to do:
The Stockton Chinese New Years Festival will be held at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum at Micke Grove on March 5th, 2023
