THE BEST DIET
John 4:4 "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
The Bible describes itself as spiritual food: the water, milk, bread, and meat of your spiritual life. It’s everything you need for sustenance. We should eat from its bounty daily.
Here’s how can you feed yourself on the Word of God:
Receive the Word with your ears. Commit to going to church and listening to God’s Word being preached. Read the Word with your eyes. Read and study the Bible. Just having it in your house is not going to bless your life. You must have the Bible in your heart, and that starts with reading it.
Research the Word with your hands and mouth. When studying the Word of God, keep a pencil in your hand. Write down what God teaches. Talk with other believers about what you’re discovering.
Reflect on the Word with your mind. Think about, meditate and chew on God’s Word.
Remember the Word with your heart. Commit God’s Word to memory.
Also, as you study the Bible it’s important that you understand how to study the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15 encourages us “to rightly divide the word of truth”. There are right ways and wrong ways to interpret Scripture. There are some methods for interpreting the Bible that will always give you the wrong interpretation. You can’t become all that God wants you to be on a
faulty foundation. God’s Word, The Bible, God’s truth never changes. You may not always understand God’s Word. You may not always like it. It won’t always be culturally or politically correct. But it’s the only thing stable enough to build your life upon. Here are some truths for interpreting the Bible that will lead you in the right direction so that you have the right foundation.
The Bible is its own best commentary. Scripture interprets Scripture. Isaiah 28:10 says precept upon precept line upon line. Practice this principle by using a Bible with cross-references in the margin. By looking up cross-references, you’ll get a clearer picture of what God has said throughout the entire Word.
You need faith and the Holy Spirit to interpret Scripture. The Bible doesn’t make sense to non-believers. It is God’s love letter to believers. 1 Cor. 2:11 says, “No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God”.
Don’t form a doctrine based solely on a historical event. Don’t build your doctrine upon historical passages of the Bible. In Mark 1, Jesus got up before dawn to go somewhere and pray by Himself, but that doesn’t mean you have to do the same. When you’re learning doctrine, look at doctrinal passages.
Never interpret Scripture based on your own experiences. The point of Bible study is not to shape Scripture to agree with your subjective opinions or your experiences. Feelings lie. Emotions lie. Discover God’s timeless truth, let it shape your life.
God doesn’t want you to just taste the goodness of his Word. He wants you to feast on it! Once you finish reading, take a few moments to walk through P.R.A.Y.
P - Pause to be still. Meditate on what you’ve just read, allowing it to sink in.
R - Reflect on Scripture. What is God saying to you through His Word? Speak aloud a verse even write it down.
A - Ask for God’s help. The challenge is to be with Jesus and become more like Him.
Y - Yield to His will in your life. God invites you into the beautiful plan He has for you, understanding His plan is beyond anything we could ask or imagine.
