Empowering students with autism to achieve their greatest potential in all aspects of their lives.

February, 2024

Dear Friends,

Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, which means that Spring is on its way! That is great news because all of us at The Timothy School have been planning many exciting Spring events.

The big news is that The Timothy School’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will be held on May 13, 2024 at Penn Oaks Golf Club. Whether you participate as a golfer, support the event as a sponsor or join us as a dinner guest, we hope you help us celebrate this momentous occasion.

Please also mark your calendar for Saturday, June 1, 2024, as it is our 2nd Annual Community Day. We are still talking about how much fun last year’s Community Day was, thanks to the variety of vendors, games, food trucks, music and more. We are planning additional exciting activities this year, so keep checking our website and social media for updates.

Thanks to TTS Alumni Liaison and beloved gym teacher, Missy Mundy, The Timothy School’s Alumni and their families have been enjoying monthly get-togethers for special activities. Whether it's visiting the Elmwood Park Zoo, bowling at Devon Lanes, or playing Virtual Bingo, these reunions have been a great success. The next get together is Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Flight On Ice in Newtown Square - we hope to see our alumni there!

Please see the links at the bottom of the newsletter to register for all of these fantastic events.

Thank you for supporting The Timothy School and our mission to educate and empower students with autism.

Think Spring!

SUPPORT US

Wishes Do Come True

The Timothy School is grateful to Claymore Environmental, a full service environmental consulting firm specializing in site investigation and remediation, for generously fulfilling the Wish List for The Timothy Crafters Program.

Claymore Environmental is delighted to support such a great organization and having visited the school recently we were all very impressed with the staff and kids we had the pleasure of meeting,” said Claymore Environmental President, Kevin Brien. “Such a great group of people using innovative ways to improve the lives of kids and their families. I would encourage any business looking for a worthwhile organization to support to reach out to The Timothy School team....they are the best.“

The Timothy Crafters is part of The Timothy School's unique on-campus internship program. The Crafters provides our Middle and Secondary School students with the opportunity to learn and practice valuable skills through the creation of professional-quality crafts in a relaxed, social setting. The items crafted by The Timothy School's young entrepreneurs are then sold to support the school's annual fund.

The Timothy Crafters Supervisor, Janet Iemolo expressed, “It was a pleasure to meet members of Claymore Environmental and share my love of The Timothy School with them. This generous gift is a blessing for our students as it provides the program with necessary items and tools that we wouldn’t have been able to acquire without Claymore’s support. With their generosity, we can now expand on our activities and take our crafting to the next level!"

From Ordinary to Extraordinary

From Ordinary to Extraordinary” is the theme of the Wayne Art Centers Art Show highlighting artwork created by our talented students.

Shannon Wolsky from the WAC said, “I have had the pleasure of working with The Timothy School students this year creating art. Please come out for a special afternoon on Sunday, March 25, 2024 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and check out the art the students have created, along with the other art throughout the Wayne Art Center.”

For over 12 years, The Wayne Art Center has been providing art classes on-campus for our students. Art classes provide an opportunity for social interaction among students, as well as for the development of skills like the ability to follow instructions, work collaboratively and think creatively. The Timothy School is grateful for this rewarding partnership with the Wayne Art Center.

If you cannot attend the special art day, the exhibit will be open February 12 - March 9. The Wayne Art Center is located at 413 Maplewood Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

Parents Matter

The Timothy School is committed to empowering parents by providing them with training and support to effectively collaborate within the school community and assist their children at home. In January, Ashley Johnson, a member of our Speech-Language Pathology Department, hosted the second part of a three-part parent training series on "Increasing Communication and Communication Opportunities."

As an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Specialist, Ashley conducts several parent groups annually, focusing on diverse topics related to communication and AAC usage.

On-Campus Internships

Luciano knows the meaning of, "Service with a smile!" It is a new marking period at The Timothy School, which means that our on-campus interns have rotated to new jobs.

Luciano is responsible for keeping inventory of, organizing, re-stocking and delivering items to the classrooms. Other on-campus internship opportunities available to our Middle School students, includes, The Timothy Crafters, School Store, Popcorn Cart, Coffee Cart, and TimTV.

This marking period, The Timothy Crafters created cool TimTV uniforms. Check out the new TimTV crew in the latest broadcast

By working with teachers and therapists, and cooperatively with peers, the vocational skills our students learn with on-campus internships prepares them for community-based work experiences. Our Secondary School and Transition Program students have internships at businesses such as Wawa, Inc., Holiday Inn Express, and Joann Fabrics.

The Timothy School's PAES Lab

“We never really know what a student can do until we give them a chance to try”

-Dr. Judith Swisher, PAES Founder & Author

Do you know about The Timothy School’s PAES Lab? It is one of the unique opportunities that we are proud to be able to provide our Secondary School and Transition students. The goal of PAES is to determine what an individual can do on their own with as little help as possible.

How does it work? In a nutshell, PAES (Practical Assessement Exploration System) turns the classroom into a work development lab where students become employees and teachers become employers. During their time in the PAES Lab, our students are able to explore different areas of vocational skills such as clerical tasks, computer skills, processing and production jobs, construction tasks, and consumer service skills. They use real tools, follow work protocols and learn professional behaviors.

The data collected from the lab modules assesses their rate and quality of work, the quality of completion, as well as each student’s interest. The TTS Transition Team works with the families to explore possible post-graduation work opportunities in which their child can be successful and will enjoy.

Be the Good Media Visits

The Timothy School is getting excited about the debut of Be The Good Media’s interview with our Executive Director, Sarah Greim. After the interview, we invited Founder and Owner of Be The Good Media, Christy McCaffrey, to tour the school and learn more about our programs. This is what Christy had to say:

“On my tour today I was able to see, first hand, the incredible programs in place that are designed to empower students with autism to achieve their greatest potential in all aspects of their lives. I also met with the staff, many of whom have been deeply invested in this school for decades and whose passion for their work and dedication to this school are an authentic reflection of what a truly special place it is. Thank you for giving me a glimpse into the magic that lives within your school community and the goodness that is rippling out into our communities as a result!”
