Student Spotlight: Alimat Jaji

Q: What is your favorite CAS course?

My favorite CAS course so far has been Human Sexuality, HES 3523, with Professor Dennison. This class opened my mind up about the sexuality spectrum and different gender identities.

Q: What do you love about CAS?

CAS courses allow us to choose from a variety of electives. Last semester I took African Dance, AFAM 4213, with Professor Casimir. This course gave a deeper understanding of the rich cultures that exist in the African diaspora and the many languages associated with each tribe.

Q: How are you spending your summer?

This summer, I am taking two classes and job shadowing at the Tulsa Sunshine Pediatric Clinic. Job shadowing at this clinic has given me a greater love for the field of occupational therapy as well as broaden my knowledge of the different ways practitioners assess their patients. Occupational therapy focuses on allowing patients to get back to their everyday routines by exercising their fine motor and sensory skills through meaningful activities. Job shadowing this summer has allowed me to interact with children living with disabilities and learn about the critical thinking that goes behind addressing their needs.

Q: How are you incorporating self care into your daily routine?

I am incorporating self care into my daily routine by spending time with my family, painting my nails and going to my local La Tapatia to try different agua frescas.

A Look Into OU Connection With Jess Mudhar

Jess Mudhar is OU's Assistant Director of student and alumni engagement, overseeing the launch of OU's newest networking platform, OU Connection. Here is what he has to say about it and why you should join OU's online community.

What is OU Connection?

OU Connection is the university's new online community that allows you to reconnect with new/old classmates and utilize the trusted University of Oklahoma environment to expand your professional network, receive mentorship or gain valuable insight from the global OU community.

What does it offer OU students that other social services, like LinkedIn, cannot?

OU students will have direct access to alumni who have self-identified as “willing to help,” meaning they are open to mentoring, answering industry-specific questions and connecting you with people that can help advance your career. The platform also grows with you; as you progress through your student experience and eventually become alumni, you can stay on the platform and serve in that capacity to current students. Along with the mentorship element, it allows you to know where and what industry our alumni are in, see events hosted that a specific to OU students and alumni and even connect through groups that are specifically created for OU members.

How can students use OU Connection to find mentors and professional opportunities?

Students can find mentors by joining the platform; once they are approved and on, they can go to the directory to see alumni who are “willing to help” or they can go to the mentorship tab and see who the platform’s algorithm has suggested for them. Once identified, they can message that alumni to set up a time to connect either through the platform, virtually or in person.
