Meet the faculty director for CAS's Student Success Center: Victoria Sturtevant
Victoria Sturtevant, Ph.D., is the faculty director for the College of Arts and Sciences' Student Success Center. Her work with faculty and staff directly impacts students' lives by ensuring their success in multiple avenues through the college.
What is the role of the Student Success Center in the College of Arts and Sciences?
Arts and Sciences students are learning all kinds of deep skills in their majors: critical thinking, quantitative skills, close reading, data analysis, research methods, cultural competency, speech and writing and so much more. We call these "transferrable skills," and they are incredibly useful, but students are often unsure of exactly how to translate them to new contexts like careers, graduate school, or activism. Our role in the SSC is to help students bridge what they love about their CAS majors with these larger personal and professional goals. It's really rewarding work and a lot of fun.
As administrator of the SSC, what are your most imperative goals concerning CAS students' success?
One of the most powerful tools to help students make the most of their OU experience is experiential learning, things like internships, study abroad, undergraduate research or service-learning. These high-impact courses place academic learning in the larger contexts of real-world communities, industries and research fields, and often help launch students on their career paths. In the SSC, we are working to expand student access to these kinds of high-impact courses, with the goal that every student should participate in one or more during their undergraduate years. This means working with departments to offer more experiential learning options and also thinking about how to remove barriers like cost, transportation, time-to-degree or scarcity of resources in order to ensure that every student graduates with the kind of confidence and efficacy that experiential learning promotes.
What do students gain when interacting with the SSC?
With all the COVID disruptions in the world keeping people apart and changing the way we work, it's especially important to lift up our students, however we can. I want CAS students to understand that their skills are EXACTLY what will help pull us through these crises. Communities need reliable information, clear communication, creative problem-solving, a deeper understanding of human diversity, the ability to listen to each other and the ability to continue learning and growing as the world changes around us. In other words, communities need you, future CAS graduates. Our goal is to help students find their own sense of purpose, connect what they love about their major to what they want to do with their lives, and go out to change the world in their own amazing ways.
