Dear Neighbors:

I was thrilled to see and talk with so many of you at the Community Block Party Wednesday evening! The feeling of community was in the air, and the ice cream smiles on the little ones reminded me how much I love this city.

While you are out and about, please consider participating in our beloved Neighborhood Pride Program! This program is designed to honor residents who have made significant improvements to their homes or maintained their properties impeccably year after year.

A special Sustainable Landscape Award will be presented to a qualifying home or business owner who has incorporated sustainable practices into their landscaping alongside general improvements. This may include reduction of water usage through reclamation or incorporation of drought tolerant plant species, installation of energy efficient exterior lighting, use of sustainable materials such as recycled composite, runoff reduction through rain gardens or permeable surfaces or the addition of native plants. All practices must comply with City ordinances and will be reviewed by members of the Neighborhood Pride Committee and the City of Kettering Planning and Development Department. Nominations should include details about items that may not be easily observed in the information provided. One sustainability award will be given for the 2024 season.

Nominate a neighbor, a business, yourself or any Kettering resident you think is deserving of the Neighborhood Pride Award. Nomination forms can be found in the summer Contact with Kettering magazine, online at www.ketteringoh.org/kettering-neighborhood-pride/, via email to dawn.kirchner@ketteringoh.org, or in person at the Volunteer Office located at 3600 Shroyer Road. The deadline for nominations is August 1.

Take care.
Peggy Lehner, Mayor

JUNE IS NATIONAL PRIDE MONTH
Kettering’s Board of Community Relations encourages everyone to welcome and respect members of the LGBTQ+ community this month and any time because Kettering is home to all of us.

Pride Month is celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, which launched the gay rights movement. When organizers of a commemorative march the following year were looking for a slogan, “Gay Power” was suggested. It was argued, however, that gay people lacked power, but they did have pride. In 1978, the pride flag was created with rainbow colors to reflect the diversity of the LGBT+ community.
EAST DAVID ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
Improvements will begin in June on East David Road from Ackerman Boulevard to Far Hills Avenue. From June 3 to August 1, the road work will require closure of the westbound lane while the eastbound lane will remain open to traffic from Ackerman to Sunray. Detour signs will be posted, and all through and local traffic will be required to access from the eastbound lane.
KETTERING LEADERSHIP ACADEMY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The Kettering Leadership Academy (KLA) is now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 class. This program created by Councilman Bruce Duke, is designed for individuals looking for leadership roles within our community such as serving on a board or commission at the City of Kettering, or at one of our area non-profit organizations. The Academy begins in September with an overnight retreat. Sessions are held once a month throughout the year until graduation in May. Sessions include information on history, local government, community organizations, education, health care, business, service clubs, and volunteering.
KLA is a fantastic opportunity to learn about all of the wonderful facets of the City of Kettering, while also gaining professional and personal growth. Each KLA class works to develop projects that will help or enhance the Kettering community. The class of 2024 is proud to introduce two new programs to Kettering!

Sparky’s Closet was inspired by Fairmont High School teacher Susan Frey. The goal of the program is to support students and families in need during clothing emergencies in a supportive, judgement free, and confidential atmosphere. Beavertown Elementary School will serve as the pilot location for this program, with hopes to expand to other schools throughout the district.

The Greenmont Elementary Summer Book Nook is focused on combatting summer slide by improving literacy skills while students are off for summer break. Children ages 1-18 will have access to a variety of books while attending the Greenmont FREE Summer Lunch program, June 3rd through August 2nd. Books will be replenished as needed thanks to donations from Kettering businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals.

Class participants were required to develop the idea, seek funding, and develop a sustainability plan to help ensure the on-going success and benefits to the need being addressed. Generous support was provided by the Kettering Noon Optimists, Dorwood Optimists, Dayton Metro Libraries, and We Care Arts.

The fee for the Academy is $800. Many employers will sponsor participants. However, if you are interested but are in need of financial assistance, the Bruce Duke Fellowship Fund is available. Please indicate your need on the application form found at www.ketteringoh.org/kettering-leadership-application/. For additional information about the Kettering Leadership Academy, call 937-296-2433 or visit www.ketteringoh.org . Applications must be received by end of day June 17.

PLANNING A NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY?
Block parties offer an opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another and develop the kind of supportive relationship many of us remember from the neighborhoods where we grew up. Maybe you will meet an older neighbor who could use some help raking leaves or shoveling snow. Maybe your children will make new friends. Maybe you’ll learn about a book club, golf league or walking group.

At the very least you’ll become more familiar with your neighbors and build the kind of bonds that are critical to a sense of belonging.

The City believes so strongly in the power of these gatherings that we offer assistance with everything from planning to road closures. Our police and fire departments cannot guarantee attendance due to workload, but will do their best to celebrate with you.
SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a variety of exciting and engaging camps every summer! If you are an adult or are a student age 14 or older, and enjoy working with children, you may be the perfect camp volunteer to assist our staff! Volunteering with summer camps can help you gain job experience, fulfill service hours, or simply enjoy helping while having fun!

Volunteers are needed all summer, but we can accommodate your schedule. Some positions require a specific time commitment or age requirement. Volunteer opportunities are available at Rosewood Arts Center, the Habitat Environmental Center and at the Kettering Recreation Center. Contact the Volunteer Office at (937) 296-2433 for more details.
