Dear Neighbors:

As we hesitate to say goodbye to the slower pace and longer days of summer, there’s something magical about the promise of fall. A new school year beckons, and kids of all ages are eager to open new chapters, learn amazing things and reconnect with friends and educators.

Before the air cools and our city comes alive with autumn hues, we have a couple of summertime favorites left on our calendars.

We always kick off August with National Night Out hosted by the Kettering Police Department. The event will be held Tuesday, August 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Lincoln Park Civic Commons. You are sure to enjoy the exhibits demonstrating policing practices, prize giveaways, food and a chance to have a night of fun with your fellow residents.

Rosewood Arts Center's premier annual event, Art on the Commons, is celebrating its 36th anniversary this year! Join us on Sunday, August 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Lincoln Park Civic Commons for a day filled with art, food, music and family fun.

Labor Day weekend in Kettering offers an array of activities to savor the last days of summer. Take one last dip into fun at Adventure Reef Water Par or cool off at the J.F. Kennedy Park Splash Pad. Try your hand at games of chance and enjoy catching up with friends and neighbors at AlterFest. And, enjoy this year’s Holiday at Home festivities on Sunday and Monday for family games, free live music, arts and crafts, food trucks, car shows and the best hometown parade around! This year’s Holiday at Home theme is “Hometown Celebrities”. Speaking of celebrities, former Councilman Bruce Duke will be this year’s Grand Marshal, and renowned actor Gary Sandy, a Fairmont High School graduate, will preside as Honorary Grand Marshal. Visit https://www.holidayathome.org for more information.

Thank you for making Kettering your community of choice. Kettering is home because of its rich history, great schools and caring residents. The small town feel and community spirit are constant reminders that there is nowhere else I’d rather live. I look forward to seeing you soon.

2024 NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE IS UNDERWAY
The yard signs have been posted for our July Neighborhood Pride winners, and we couldn't wait to share these notable properties right here!

The Neighborhood Pride Program is a Kettering tradition designed to honor residents who have made significant improvements to their homes or who have maintained their properties impeccably year after year.

Also, a Sustainable Landscape Award will be presented to a qualifying home or business owner who incorporated sustainable practices into their landscaping alongside general improvements normally considered. This may include reduction of water usage through reclamation or incorporation of drought tolerant plant species, installation of energy efficient exterior lighting, use of sustainable materials such as recycled composite, runoff reduction through rain gardens or permeable surfaces, or the addition of native plants. All practices must comply with City ordinances and will be reviewed by members of the Neighborhood Pride Committee and the City of Kettering Planning and Development Department. Nominations should include details about items that may not be easily observed in the information provided. One award will be given for the 2024 season.

August 1 is the final day to nominate a neighbor, a business, yourself or any Kettering resident you think is deserving of the Neighborhood Pride Award. Nomination forms are available online at www.ketteringoh.org, by email to dawn.kirchner@ketteringoh.org, or in person at the Volunteer Office located at 3600 Shroyer Road.

SHRED DAY AND STYROFOAM RECYCLING EVENT PLANNED FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28!
The City of Kettering and Day Air Credit Union offer this annual shred event to Kettering residents as a way to safely dispose of personal and household documents. This year, the event will be held Saturday, September 28, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Fairmont High School, 3301 Shroyer Road.

This drive-through event allows residents to remain in their vehicles. City staff and volunteers will be on hand to remove items for shredding. This keeps the workflow running smoothly and allows us to pass along quick service to our residents.

This popular Kettering event provides residents the opportunity to bring sensitive paperwork to a centralized location to be shredded on site and then recycled. Over the past few years, increased interest from residents in expanding this event have been expressed, and we listened! Thanks to our partnership with Day Air Credit Union and Montgomery County, we will also be
accepting Styrofoam and small electronics. If you have questions,
please call Dawn Kirchner at (937) 296-2531.

Please bring papers to be shredded in cardboard boxes or other containers. Do not place papers in trash bags or other plastic bags. The line is the longest right at the beginning of the event and significantly slows down from 11:00 a.m. to noon.

Feelings from grief:
  • Sadness: Feeling deep sorrow and longing.
  • Anger: Frustration and resentment.

  • Confusion: Mixed emotions and uncertainty.

How to help:
  • Listen: Offer a compassionate ear without judgment.

  • Share Memories: Celebrate the life of the person they've lost.
  • Encourage Self-Care: Remind them to take care of themselves.
