Reading: A Family Affair

Although our first annual Read-a-thon is coming to a close this week, I feel so much joy as I observe the continuous enthusiasm expressed by students and their families. Silver students have been faithfully toting their independent reading books from class to class, and even requesting extra time for D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read). This Thursday, we even had a special D.E.A.R. time dedicated to reading exclusively in Hebrew!

But perhaps the component of the Read-a-thon that I have found most inspiring is the reading students are doing at home with their families. Over Thanksgiving, I asked families to snap photos of their children reading with relatives, and this past Tuesday, students' only homework assignment was to read with their families and loved ones. The photos that the teachers and I have received are truly heartwarming, and reflect how reading together can be a family affair. The Silver Academy is lucky to have such a strong community, and it is clear that reading together is just another way to strengthen these bonds.

I urge everyone to keep reading together as a family, even after our Read-a-thon ends. It's important to remember that a love of reading starts at home, and by continuing to support and celebrate reading as a family, you will have an invaluable impact on helping your children become lifelong readers.

Shabbat Shalom!

Chanukah begins on the night of December 12th, and we are getting ready for it in Ganeinu. We are learning how to prepare our menorah for each night and how to light it in the traditional manner. We have talked about The Maccabees winning against a larger foe and the miracle of the oil lasting for 8 nights. Come to the Celebration of Light & Learning on December 19th to hear our song and see why we know exactly how to light a menorah!

During the past two weeks, students have been participating in a novel study of  Hatchet , which tells the story of a thirteen year-old boy named Brian who finds himself stranded in the wilderness. To prepare for the unit, students read real-life survival stories, and learned about techniques for surviving in the wilderness. They've also been studying figurative language by creating a Figurative Language Survival Toolbox, and analyzing point of view. To this end, they are composing field journals from Brian's perspective that record the major points of each chapter. Middle schoolers will be using their journals to draft a creative writing piece at the end of the novel. Stay tuned for what's coming up next in Middle School Language Arts!

Development Office News
#GivingTuesday was a fabulous day and our numbers are in! The Silver Academy raised $12,437 in ONE DAY! This is a new school record, I think. Donations were made on our Facebook page, our web page and in person. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are matching $1,000.00 in donations made to The Silver Academy. The match payment will be paid through Network For Good by February 15, 2018. Thank you!

Together, there was over $274 million raised online in the U.S. in 24 hours, in addition to completing thousands of acts of kindness and charity. Click here for more information about #GivingTuesday.

Our parent Annual Campaign Chairs will be reaching out to you in the next few days. Whether it is $18 or $1800, please help us share the value of tzedakah from your homes just as it is so beautifully instilled in our children within our Silver Academy classrooms. We are striving for 100% participation. Additionally, with an increase in giving participation by our school families, we can help the school better access investment from donors and foundations, knowing that our own families support our school.

If you have not yet made your gift or pledge, today is the perfect day to do so. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. If you'd like to make your gift to this year's campaign now, please click here:  Donate Now

Thank you for sharing your children with us! Looking forward to lots of Cookies and Cocoa.
