A Christian community of all ages

July 6 - July 12, 2024

From the Associate Rector

Dear Friends,

As our first Beach Dinner of the summer approached on June 23rd, the weather was giving us a run for our money. At church that morning we could see the fog rolling in out the windows of St. George’s Chapel.  A few hours later I had drafted the email to cancel the event when suddenly the sun poked through the clouds and the weather report instantly changed. We decided to go ahead and meet at the beach for dinner, s’mores, and Compline - even though it was hardly a picture perfect beach night.

I am so grateful that we didn’t let the weather scare us off that night. A sweet group of St. Mary’s parishioners and friends gathered on that cloudy evening. We chatted and laughed together, we shared snacks and fruit (see the kids and Michael posing with the watermelon in the picture above!), and we gave thanks to God around the fire. Just as it always is when two or three of us are gathered, God was in the midst of us.

Since then we’ve had even more opportunities to gather and share the Fruits of the Spirit and the Fruits of the Summer. While I missed Strawberry Sunday last week I heard about how lovely it was, and I know a large team of folks helped provide ministry at Church Beyond the Walls as well. What a weekend!

What I love about our summer program at St. Mary’s is that it gives us unique and different ways to spend time together. Sharing dinner at the beach, picking strawberries, listening to music, dancing - all of these moments help us to connect to one another and to God. I look forward to all the moments we have yet to share together this summer.

While we walk through these summer events together we continue to walk through Jesus’ ministry as told through the gospel of Mark. This week we will hear about how Jesus sent out the disciples together in pairs, with the authority to do God’s healing work in the world. The disciples and Jesus had shared meals and experienced unique and different ways to be together. God was in the midst of them, and they were ready for what was next, just as I know we will be here at St. Mary’s - all of these holy moments transforming us and equipping us to do God's healing work in the world.

. . . the team of over 30 people and Sara Barker, team leader, who made Strawberry Sunday such a great experience. The team picked and cleaned strawberries; made shortbread biscuits; set up, served, and cleaned up; and offered outstanding hospitality to St. Mary's members and friends. Their work easily represents 40 total hours that contributed to the well-being of the parish and community.

Also, many thanks to Karen and Matt Spohn and Quonset View Farms for the delicious strawberries. They contributed the 42 pounds of strawberries that some of us picked!

Jazz Eucharist

The Lois Vaughan Jazz Quintet

The quintet will lead us in our congregational hymns, and will offer instrumental music before the service beginning at 9:30am and during Communion. Join us for this special musical offering with coffee hour to follow!

The Good Living Band's three part harmonies, rhythmic acoustic guitars, and lush bass lines set this cover band apart from other bands. Their vast catalogue of favorites spans from "Friday I'm In Love" to "Ventura Highway,"

The Good Living Band brings bon vivant vibes to our first summer outdoor concert.

If you'd like to learn more about the band, you can visit them on Facebook or Instagram.

And of course, join us on Wednesday, July 17 from 6-8 p.m. for the free concert on the lawn!

Birthday Cakes for the MLKCC

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center has asked for birthday cake mix pans for their food pantry, and we are asking you to make up a birthday cake package for them!

Each package should include a

  • cake mix,
  • 12-ounce can or bottle of Sprite,
  • can of frosting,
  • bottle of sprinkles (or you can use Funfetti mix or Funfetti frosting instead),
  • package of sprinkles, and
  • a 9x13 pan with a lid.

If you'd prefer, you can donate $6, and we'll buy and prepare the package for you.

We will be collecting the packages the weekends of July 6/7, 13/14, and 20/21.

If you have questions, please contact Judy Hall.

Also, from now until September 2, every pound of food that St. Mary's contributes to the MLKCC will be matched $1 for 1 pound.

Be sure to contribute, so the following people will be helped

  • families using the Food Pantry and high school pantries to make ends meet.
  • homebound seniors who rely on the Food to Friends Programs for their groceries.
  • someone looking to start their meal with a hot breakfast.

In the coming months, help meet the needs of the food insecure in our community by donating to St. Mary's food drive.
