Remember

By Joy Harjo

Remember the sky that you were born under,

know each of the star’s stories.

Remember the moon, know who she is.

Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the

strongest point of time. Remember sundown

and the giving away to night.

Remember your birth, how your mother struggled

to give you form and breath. You are evidence of

her life, and her mother’s, and hers.

Remember your father. He is your life, also.

Remember the earth whose skin you are:

red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth

brown earth, we are earth.

Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their

tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,

listen to them. They are alive poems.

Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the

origin of this universe.

Remember you are all people and all people

are you.

Remember you are this universe and this

universe is you.

Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.

Remember language comes from this.

Remember the dance language is, that life is.

Remember.

Dear People of Ascension,

Every year around the 4th of July, I like to offer a poem and the question, what does it mean to love your country? These are troubled and exhausting times, and yet they demand that we find hope and courage to care for one another and the larger common good. Perhaps this lovely poem from Joy Harjo, Poet Laureate of the United States from 2019-2022 (the first Native American so honored) and member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, will invite new reflection and imagining about our belonging to the earth, to one another and to our shared stories.

With gratitude for you,

Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Ascension Summer Schedule

Our summer service schedule begins this Sunday (July 7) with a single Sunday morning service at 10 a.m. Our evening service continues at 6 p.m. We return to our regular schedule of two morning services on Sunday, September 8. See you in church!

We are shocked and saddened to receive the news that Fr. Andrew Foster, Ascension’s eleventh rector, died early Monday morning, July 1, at Pilgrim Place, the senior community in Claremont California where he had lived since his retirement from Ascension in 2012. His unexpected death followed complications from surgery.

Fr. Andrew came to Ascension in 1999. His previous ministries had included college chaplaincy at Kenyon College and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor as well as serving as rector of St. Paul’s on the island of Nantucket. His tenure at Ascension brought increased engagement with Canterbury downtown, response to the attacks of September 11 and their aftermath, and of course the renovation of the church and the installation of the Manton Memorial Organ. An insightful and kind pastor, he was both an icon writer and a lover of music. He sang in Ascension’s choir as well as presiding at our altar.

Fr. Andrew’s funeral will be held in California, and his ashes will then be inurned in our columbarium at Ascension. All will be welcome at the committal, and we will share information about it with the parish once we know more.

Please hold Fr. Andrew’s wife Lynda and sons Will and Greg in your prayers. He is mourned as well by many at Pilgrim Place, where he had found both friends and opportunities to serve.

“Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.”

We have a new Presiding Bishop! On June 26, the House of Bishops elected, and the House of Deputies confirmed, the Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, Bishop of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York to become the 28th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Please pray for Bishop Rowe and his family as he prepares to take up his new ministry, which begins November 1. You can find out more about Bishop Rowe by clicking here; and you click here to watch his press release.

The Lectionary Bible Study Group is taking the summer off beginning 7/8.

See you again in September.
