Volunteer Dy Thresher Honored with Point of Light Award!

“She can be relied upon to be the first one to assist in whatever we need to accomplish as an organization.” Director of Volunteer Services Pat Forest says. “She has made the lives of many people better just by being there to help in whatever way she can.”

Dy, who has served in the United States Navy and then as an army wife, is a respected veteran, provider and friend to all at NVRH. She has been a volunteer at NVRH since 2009. In the past 15 years, she has given 7,118 hours of volunteer time, averaging between 40 and 80 hours per month. In the past six years, she has also provided 463 hours of volunteer service time to The Medical Reserve Corps.

Her duties have included – but are not limited to – performing Reiki on patients and staff; serving as a N95 Fit Tester, screening patients and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic; volunteering at VeggieVanGo, a drive-thru program where the Vermont Foodbank delivers fresh produce on the third Thursday of every month (photo above); and registering patients for Red Cross Blood Drives.

Denim and Diamonds Gala Raises $108,000 for Palliative Care

"Many thanks to all the NVRH staff who played a role in this success. And a special THANK YOU to Dr. Michael and Ginger Rousse for hosting the event at their beautiful farm in Danville. Good thing Michael had a generator to power up the band and lights after we lost power (and Richard Degreenia was on-hand to hook it up), and a tractor to pull out stuck cars. Definitely a Gala to remember!"

Career Advancement Program (CAP) Update

Cheryl Byrne, Med-Surg LNA.

NVRH offers professional/workforce development by offering full tuition coverage for select programs to currently eligible, full-time employees.

Human Resources team members Christopher Byrne, and Christine Allsop had an opportunity to have an exclusive impromptu interview with Cheryl Byrne, LNA. Cheryl is a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) on the Med-Surg Unit. Cheryl is our first nursing assistant to be awarded and enrolled in the LPN Career Advancement Program (CAP). She is in her final semester. Cheryl will graduate in January as an LPN and we wanted to gather an understanding of her experience in the program. Cheryl had many positive insights– everything from her initial excitement about joining the program, to all that she has learned from her time in school and through her rotations – not only at NVRH, but also through her exposure to the operations at North Country Home Health and Hospice Agency, Androscoggin Valley Hospital, and Littleton Regional Healthcare.

Among the many wonderful aspects of the program, Cheryl did have some challenges to share and a piece of advice for those who will be soon starting the program or are considering applying. Her general advice was about being able to find the right balance between personal, professional, and educational goals. Identifying her needs and commitments early on was critical to her success. In reference to how NVRH offers some stability through the program, Cheryl said, “the balance is perfect and amazing!” noting that NVRH offers a flexible work schedule to meet her studying and clinical time – all while being compensated and her tuition paid for! Cheryl plans to begin the RN program in fall of 2025.

There are two others that will be embarking on their LPN-to-RN CAP journey through Vermont State University (VTSU) – Jen Hooker, Emergency Department Technician and Nicole King, Medical Assistant from St. Johnsbury Pediatrics.

Join us in wishing all of our CAP students much success in their future endeavors with NVRH!

“Contentment In Imperfect Beauty” by Newark painter Marianne Burkholder

“My mother often recounted a story from my childhood that encapsulates my approach to art and life,” Marianne said. “As an elementary school student, I made her a Mother’s Day card featuring an illustration of a woman with three legs, one of which I had crossed out. When she asked me about it, I explained that I had changed my mind about the placement of the legs and didn’t see the need for a new piece of paper.”

For Marianne, art is not about achieving flawlessness; it is about the joy and fulfillment that comes from the creative process, and her paintings reflect this philosophy, embracing the beauty in imperfection and the stories that each brushstroke tells. Read more.

GET TO KNOW Gregory Montoya, Cook!

Cooks do all the cooking for patients, staff, and visitors. While keeping up with the food in the cafeteria, they are also preparing up to 30 inpatient meals for each meal period – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – in addition to responding to requests that come in outside of normal mealtime hours. And, because nearly all meals are made from scratch, cooks must extensively meal prep in advance.

A note from Director of Nutrition and Food Service Sharon Pinard-Sisle: "Gregory Montoya is very knowledgeable about food, very kind and reliable. Thank you, Gregory!"
