The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute hosted its annual Spring Patron Luncheon on Saturday, June 25, 2023. Former Board Chair Mike McGeary provided gathering music on his banjo as guests arrived for coffee and pastries under the Railyard Water Tower. After a brief orientation by Institute Board Vice Chair Pam Walker, and a welcome from Santa Fe Farmers’ Market CEO Debbie Burns, the group joined chefs and docents for “Shopping with the Chef” tours of the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market. One guest commented, “It was fun to visit with new vendors, to hear their stories, and learn about produce and products that were unfamiliar to me. The extra insights that the chefs provided on uses of products were very interesting and their suggested recipes were stimulating.”
Late morning, the patrons strolled over to the Santa Fe School of Cooking where they enjoyed selections from the American Songbook played by pianist Bert Dalton, and sipped Gruet Brut Rosé NV and Ginger Mint Lemonade. Chef MaryDawn Wright, who curated with the Mediterranean menu, prepared one of the appetizers – roasted carrot and chickpea hummus – in an engaging cooking demonstration.
Ingredients for the three-course luncheon were sourced from Santa Fe Farmers’ Market farmers and vendors: Annie's Herb Farm, Anthony Wagner Family Farm, Camino de Paz School & Farm, CLC Pecans LLC, Cloud Cliff Bakery, DVG LLC (Dome Valley Garlic Oil), El Bosque Garlic Farm, Farm Stand Thank and Trust, Growing Opportunities, Inc., Heidi’s Raspberry Farm, Khalsa Family Farms, Lotus Farms, LLC., Love Family Farm, Mendez Produce, Mr. G's Organic Produce, Red Mesa Meats, Reyah Sunshine Farm, LLC, Santa Fe Mountain Mushrooms, Shepherd's Lamb, and The Vagabond Farmers. Florecita Flowers, owned by a third-generation farming family, provided the delightful bouquets sourced from local flower farms, including Marie Carter’s El Jardin De Flores.
The program included an expression of gratitude to Santa Fe School of Cooking Director Nicole Ammerman and her outstanding team given by Institute Board Chair Michael Knight. Board Member Christine Castro then interviewed new Executive Director Adan Manuel “Manny” Encinias Ph.D. It was inspiring for the sold-out crowd to hear Manny’s vision for the future of the Institute.
The Institute’s first Corporate Partnership Award was presented to Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center and Presbyterian Healthcare Services. Hospital Chief Executive John Adams and Carrie Thielen, MPH, RD Director of Regional Community Health, accepted the award from Institute Treasurer Kyle Burns, President of The Rikoon Group, a corporate sponsor. The Inaugural Rainmaker Philanthropy Award was presented to long-time supporter Linda Osborne by Institute Board Secretary Mary Dixon of Green Tractor Farm. Mary also thanked Linda Osborne and Patrick J. Carr for serving as Honorary Co-Chairs of the event.
A paddle-raiser led by Director of Sales and Business Development for New Mexico Fresh Foods, Mark C. Johnson, generated support for Institute programs. The fundraiser – along with the delicious chocolate pecan torte – (Chef MaryDawn Wright shares her recipe here.) – provided a very sweet ending to a delightful day!

The Institute’s Information Booth, staffed by Market Programs Manager Anna Griswold oversaw redemption of Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center Employee Vouchers, Fresh Rx “prescriptions” for fresh produce, and EBT draws as part of the Double Up Food Bucks program (DUFB). DUFB is the program through which SNAP participants double their purchasing power for fresh, nutritious, locally produced food. The combined effort resulted in nearly $1,900 in fresh produce support extended to address food insecurity on the underserved south side of Santa Fe.
WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Incentive Program staffed information and registration booths where fresh produce coupons were distributed for seniors and families with children. As always, our partner Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center was present, and offered wellness checks.
