THE ANNUAL PLANT EXCHANGE

AFTER THE DELUGE

"How to Care for Flood and Water-Damaged Plants"

~ By UC Agriculture and Natural Resources

Proper irrigation and drainage are critically important for the health of plants and trees. But what happens when Mother Nature throws an atmospheric river curveball, and your yard or garden is now under water from heavy rains or floods? READ MORE

FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN

  • Prune Fuchsias.
  • Start seeds (indoors) of warm-season crops requiring 4 - 8 weeks of growth before setting out, such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and basil.
  • Consider whether your fruit trees need a dormant oil spray if you have had problems in the previous growing season.
  • Review items on January list (AND add a visit to The Plant Exchange)

GIVING GREEN

The Plant Exchange's mission involves "paying it forward" with donations of plants and materials to other non-profits, hospitals, senior centers, and other community groups. All free of charge! If your non-profit organization would like some free plants, visit our Giving Green Program. Here are two of our recent recipients:

KESEM is committed to creating a world where every child who has a parent with a cancer diagnosis or has lost a parent to cancer is never alone. They support these children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with free, fun-filled creative programs and a lasting community.

LOVED TWICE helps newborns in need with quality reused baby clothing for the first year of life. They collect gently-used baby clothes, sort these garments into wardrobes-in-a-box, and distribute them exclusively through social workers in hospitals, shelters, and clinics.

GRATITUDE

The Plant Exchange events are made possible through the help of our wonderful sponsors and supporters. We extend our sincere appreciation to each and every one of them.

This month we'd like to especially thank the Rose Foundation for once again giving us a grant! They support grassroots initiatives that help build a world in which individuals, organizations, and communities are empowered to promote stewardship of nature, inspire people to take action, and hold government and corporations accountable.

The Plant Exchange is a 501(c)(3) non-profit serving the Oakland community since 2007. We encourage sharing resources, reusing materials, reducing landfill waste, and promoting sustainable gardening practices. We support other Bay Area non-profits and community groups by redistributing rescued plants for horticulture education and community beautification projects.
