Summer is flying by here at Valley Humane, and we hope you’re staying cool amid the heat waves! Last weekend was our 10th annual Tails at Twilight gala, and it was hot, raising more than $300K to support Valley Humane's lifesaving programs and services. Next year we'll celebrate on April 12, so be sure to save the date. Summer brings many changes to the way we care for our pets. As temperatures rise, be sure to check our essential tips below to keep your furry friends cool and safe during the sunny days ahead. Let's make this summer a season of fun and care for animals in our community and help our pets beat the heat!
July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, which makes it a good time to make sure your pets stay safe! More than 10 million pets go missing each year, but you can keep those tails wagging and purrs rumbling by following a few simple tips:
- Make sure your furry friend sports a collar with an updated ID tag that fits snugly, but comfortably (two fingers should easily slip underneath).
- During your strolls, always use a leash to keep your pet close at hand.
- At home, check any fences for gaps, and reinforce the bottom to deter escape artists.
- Microchipping is also very helpful--Valley Humane Society ensures all adopted pets are chipped before they go home.
- If your pet goes missing, go out and physically look for them in your neighborhood. Check local shelters, and post in community groups on Facebook and NextDoor.
Pets are family, so let’s keep them safe and sound!

Summer of Love: Become a Foster Family
Open your heart and home to a furry friend in need this summer. Valley Humane Society can only rescue as many cats and dogs as we have the space to house, and foster families help us save more lives by expanding our capacity. By fostering, you'll help prepare animals for adoption, provide a place for sick or injured pets to heal, help young animals stay healthy, and coax shy ones out of their shells. It's a short-term commitment with long-term rewards. We'll provide all necessary supplies and veterinary care. Sign up for our next Foster Families Workshop, Tuesday, July 30 at 5 pm, and make a difference this summer!

Summer Heat Safety
On these hot, hot days, keep pets cool by providing shady spots outside and plenty of water to drink. Avoid leaving pets in cars for any length of time, and stay off hot asphalt. Be sure to give older pets and those with health concerns extra TLC indoors. Take walks early in the day or later at night to keep pets cool! Summer is better with happy, healthy pets!
