Practicum Capstone Presentations

The Rutgers School of Public Health Office for Community Engagement and Public Health Practice held its student Practicum Capstone presentations in May. All Master of Public Health students are required to complete a semester-long Practicum Capstone project in which they work with faculty mentors to explore a public health related research question.

Students synthesize what they have learned in their Master of Public Health curriculum to create a project that complements their professional goals. The Practicum Capstone represents a culminating experience where students produce a high-quality written report and subsequent presentation to share their findings.

This past spring, over 100 students presented their research to over 300 individuals, including friends, family, and faculty members. Students from the School’s many concentrations presented. A sample of topics by concentration are listed below:

  • Biostatistics: Thai Maternal Risk Factors for Gestational Age and Birth Weight Adjusted for Gestational Age
  • Environmental Health Sciences: Evaluating Blood Lead Levels in Children and Water Lead Levels in New Jersey With Consideration of Lead Exposure Through Drinking Water in Child Care Centers
  • Epidemiology: Impact of HIV Infection on Salivary Flow Rate among the Pediatric Population in Nigeria
  • Global Public Health: Significant Characteristics of Health and Wellbeing Among Women Who Began Selling Sex as Minors in Senegal
  • Health Systems and Policy: Impact of Patient Affordability on Provider Prescribing and Treatment Behavior
  • LGBTQ Health: Transgender People’s Barriers to Care in The State of New Jersey
  • Occupational Safety and Health: Analysis of Dry Chemical Silica Exposure Among Federal Aviation Administration Airport Firefighting and Rescue Technicians
  • Public Health Nutrition: Adolescent Food Choice and Climate Change: Piloting A Semi-Structured Interview and Free Listing Guide for A Larger, Multi-Method Study
  • Social and Behavioral Health Sciences: Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on High-Risk Behavior
  • Urban Public Health: An Analysis of Fair and Ethical Resource Distribution and Data Sharing During Public Health Crises

The Practicum Capstone allows students to directly engage in current public health challenges. As evidenced by the variety of topics listed above, these projects aim to address inequities in New Jersey, the United States, and around the globe while illustrating the critical importance of collaboration with community partners to positively impact change. Creating public health practitioners who strive to improve the well-being of all people and populations will create a healthier state, nation, and world.

Student Connect Corner - October

At the Rutgers School of Public Health, we not only aim for our students to be academically successful, but we provide a series of support services that promote a holistic perspective of wellness so our students can continue developing in all areas of their lives while at the school. Last year, we conducted our annual student survey and found that while students were satisfied with the services they were offered, they were seeking more specialized events by program or profession, access to increased University resources, and streamlined communication about all the opportunities students have to build community and gain essential skills.

You asked and we tried to deliver!

This year, students will have access to:

  • More departmental socials and in-depth professional development workshops!
  • A robust job and internship database platform called Rutgers Handshake!
  • Improved Canvas pages for details on all the resources, services, and opportunities available to students and alumni!
