Admin Minute

With this final stretch of the school year, it is important to double check that your students are working with their teachers to shore up their third quarter learning and excel in their fourth quarter targets. These final weeks are essential to earning credit and preparing for classes for next year.

Oftentimes parents think that high school is the time to take a more hands-off approach to supporting our students, but the reality is that our children need more offers of connection and assurances of our commitment to them than they ever have before. They are more unsure of themselves and need clear examples of how all their caring adults are communicating with each other.

Here are a couple of simple steps that can help your student finish strong!

  • Please check PowerSchool weekly on Wednesday or Thursday. Don’t rely on Sunday morning emails to see if your student is completing work. PowerSchool grades are reliable and should be updated regularly.
  • Please call or email your student’s teacher for partnership if you have any questions. One of our goals is for students to become advocates for their own needs. Sometimes that requires coaching from both parents and teachers. It can be very powerful for you to know the facts and use them to coach your child on how to work with their teachers.

I encourage you to start thinking through next-step boundaries for your student when the grades and attendance are good, as well as when they aren’t so good. For example, does your family have a rule about how cell phones, video games, chores, or transportation are connected to earning good grades? Now is the time to sort out what the next school year looks like and commit to expectations for achievement.

Saxon Shoutout!

Congratulations to the Ferris Hispanic Honor Society Club for being honored with a CHASE YOUTH AWARD this week for their work in Social Advocacy and Cultural Awareness!

In conjunction with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish's new group of Ambassadors, members who are heritage Spanish speakers from around the globe who have relocated to Spokane, the Ferris Hispanic Honor Society started a Conversation Club in which both Spanish and English language learners convene weekly to practice conversational skills. This Club validates our youth's confidence and identity in heritage language and cultures, while also demystifying diversity and creating empathy among youth. In addition, they organized a partnership with the Spokane Public Language Immersion program at the Libby Center, working with students from 1st - 6th grade on Readers Theater, preparing a play called Trabajando Juntos (Working Together), continuing language development. There is no doubt that having serious helpers in younger language classrooms is a wonderful asset to developing multilingual youth!

Saxon Sports Headlines

May 1st, Senior Katya Jones is participating in a FUN RUN to support Shriners Hospital.

Last year, through an ice cream party, Katya raised $625. This year, her ambition soars to $5,100. Every entry, every step, every story brings her closer to this goal, lighting a path of hope for many more children and families.

Katya's goal is to raise $5,100 doing a 5.1K because her birthday is May 1st!

Here's what the situation will look like on May 1st at Ferris:

  • We will hold a normal track practice from 2:45-4:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to stick around to join Katya for a 5.1K , which is 12.75 times around the track. Feel free to run, walk, or sing and dance your way around the track :)
  • Music will be played over the loudspeakers for the time it takes Katya to do the 12.75 laps.
  • Popsicles will be provided

We would love it if more people from the school (not just our Track team) could participate too and help Katya shine and share her love with everyone.

Here is more information about her fundraiser. See you May 1 at 4:00 pm!
