The Roll-Up

April 2023

Starting this month, we're excited to launch the first edition of our monthly newsletter - The Roll-Up. Each month we'll feature topics that have do with our firm, insights into what we're seeing in the market, and also topics completely unrelated to the private markets that we find interesting (and hope you do too).

Some of this content is not going to be relevant (or interesting) to some, so if you're one of those people, or you're Aaron Rogers ("Lose my number. Good try tho"), please click that "Unsubscribe" button at the bottom of this email and we will confirm the breakup.

If you happen to be sticking around to see how this goes - Welcome! We're glad you're here and hopeful that these emails bring you a little break from your day to day, and that you find something interesting in each month's newsletter to share with those around you. If you like it, let us know.

Here's what we're talking about this month:

The Masters

"The Picture Frame is Worth More Than The Stock"

A Tradition Unlike Any Other

It's the first week in April, which means its time for The Masters. Whether you're an avid golfer and watch the PGA Tour each week, or tune in once a year to watch the tournament, here are SIX interesting facts about The Masters that you can be sure to share with your friends when you're watching the tournament:

  1. On the Par 5, 13th hole, there are over 1,600 azaleas and 30 different variations of the flower, just on this single hole, all in perfect bloom at the time of the tournament.
  2. You could order the entire menu, 27 items in total, and it would cost only $60, with the most famous option, the Pimento Cheese Sandwich coming in at a whopping $1.50, making the $2k you just spent on Masters swag easier to swallow.
  3. Last year, The Masters generated $142 million in total revenue, with $70 million coming from merchandise, $39 million from ticket sales, $25 million from international television rights, and $8 million from concessions. You're not alone in spending $2k on Masters swag.
  4. You may notice the sand in the bunkers at Augusta National is almost perfectly white. Turns out, this isn't actually sand, but rather a type of Quartz called 'Spruce Pine Sand', named for the mine in Western North Carolina where it is found.
  5. The fairways at Augusta National are wide, averaging over half a football field in width at 54.4 yards. The average of all the other PGA Tour courses is only 25 yards.
  6. The golf course alone at Augusta National sits on a massive piece of land, totaling 352 acres. The average golf course in the US sits on 160 acres.

Valentine's Day or Groundhog's Day?

On Valentine's Day 1990 a high-flying investment bank named Drexel Burnham Lambert shockingly and abruptly collapsed. A Drexel Burnham stock certificate comedically hangs on the wall in Geoff's office - the frame is worth more than the stock. In the years since, the Drexel Diaspora of former employees and partners, including Geoff Faux and Ollie Maggard, has produced some of the most influential firms and investors of the last 25 years in private markets. Given recent historic recurrence in the banking sector we ask you - is it Valentine's Day or Bill Murray's Groundhog's Day?
