Aseret Y’mei T’shuvah (The Ten Days of Return): Yom Kippur 5784

The period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is known as aseret y’mei t’shuvah (The Ten Days of Return/Repentance). It is for individual reflection on the past year and decision-making for the year to come. It is a time for mending relationships by asking forgiveness from those we’ve hurt so we can approach God, on Yom Kippur, having “taken care of business.”

This annual process begs a question asked and answered by Rabbi Josef Albo (1380-1444; Spanish philosopher) in his classic work Sefer ha-Ikarim (The Book of Principles): If God knows all that will happen, why bother praying for forgiveness? If God has already decided to forgive, prayer is unnecessary. If God has decided to not forgive, the prayer is powerless. Albo’s answer is that true t'shuvah changes you completely. Once you’ve become this new person, God’s previous decree no longer applies to you (Sefer ha-Ikarim IV 18:1 and 8). According to Albo, this transformation also can be achieved through sincere t’filah (prayer).

Jewish thought suggests that the t’shuvah we do each day of aseret y’mei t’shuvah achieves forgiveness for all the wrongdoings done to others on each of those Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, etc., during the entire previous year (Mishnah B’rurah 603:2). Thus, we can enter Yom Kippur having only to do t’shuvah for our offenses to God.

Doing t’shuvah can be daunting, and ten days may seem inadequate. But God is our partner in t’shuvah; God is just waiting for the chance to forgive. If we take the first step, even if it’s as small as “the eye of a needle,” God will open entrances “even wagons can fit through” (Shir haShirim Rabah 5:2).

New Volunteer Opportunities

All-School T'filah

Help set up All-School T'filah on Mondays, 8:15 a.m.-8:40 a.m. Sign up once or once a month!

Chesed Committee

The PTO Chesed Committee’s purpose is to support Heilicher families during life cycle events or whenever there’s a need. The committee’s volunteers provide a warm, home-cooked meal to families that have a new baby (hopefully many of those), for shivah, or illness. Perhaps a family is in need of a ride to an appointment, or just a challah for Shabbat. Kol Yisrael areivim zeh bazeh means all Jews are there for each other, or, simply, “it takes a village.”

Our goal is to make sure that all Heilicher families know that we as a community are there to support them in times of need. To get involved, please email Sharon Feinstein-Rosenblum or sign up on SignUpGenius.

Morning Drop-Off Procedures

Now that we are into September, schoolwide routines are taking shape. Arrival begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 8:15 a.m. Please review the following morning drop-off procedures. These are designed to safely move many children out of cars and into the school in a short time.

  • All students must be dropped off at the curb — do not drop off your child in the parking lot. You may park and walk your child across the crosswalk and to the entry.
  • Pull as far forward to the end of the sidewalk as you are able and let your child out.
  • As you pull into the lot, make sure items are gathered, coats are on, and bags are ready to go.
  • Do not get out of your car to help your child exit. If they need help with buckles and bags, staff can assist. If backpacks are in the front seat or trunk, staff can also help. If you must get out of the car to help your child, please pull all the way forward to the end of the sidewalk.
  • Children should exit out the right side of the vehicle. If this is an issue, please ask staff to come around and help with exiting on the left side.

If you or your child are having trouble with this, please let your teacher know and we will work together to plan for a safe and successful start to the day.

Before Care and Late Drop-Off

If you arrive later than 8:15 a.m., please park and walk your child into the building and to the Heilicher Welcome Desk.

Drop-off for Before Care is available from 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. — no drop-offs are allowed between 7:45 and 8 a.m. Use your parent access card to enter the building and walk your child(ren) to the dining room. You must sign in in the dining room.

Before Care is free and will be supervised by a Heilicher staff member. Activities will include board games and art; students may also read or do homework during this time. Food is not provided; however, you are welcome to send a dairy or parev (nondairy/nonmeat) breakfast for your child to eat before school begins. Students will be sent to their classrooms at 8 a.m.

Please email frontdesk@hmjds.org if you have any questions.
