October 26, 2023

Wednesday was Heilicher's Unity Day, so everyone wore orange as a reminder to be kind and stand against bullying.

Welcoming Israeli Families

.כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל עֲרֵבִים זֶה בָּזֶה

All Jews are responsible for one another.

Heilicher is welcoming families from Israel into our classrooms and into our community. We welcome the Nahmani family, Yamit and Ari, whose children Einav and Noa started in fourth and second grade today. They have a special connection to Heilicher, as Einav and Noa are the grandchildren of former long-time Heilicher teacher, Gveret Barbara Taragan.

Our doors are open to Israeli families who have come to Minnesota in need of an education and community for their children. If you know of any Israeli families looking for a school, please reach out to our director of admissions: Deborah Getsug, dgetsug@hmjds.org or 952.381.3523.

Tonight: Billy Jonas Concert

Musician Billy Jonas spent the day with some of our grades 1-7 students during music classes today. At 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium today, all are invited for a FREE interactive Billy Jonas concert featuring Heilicher students and everyone in the audience.

Security Request

To help ensure the safety of our students and community, we ask that parents keep their Heilicher parent badges visible when in the building. This helps the school and campus know that all guests have checked in and that everybody in the building is supposed to be there.

Support a Heilicher Parent's IDF Battalion

Shmuel Livne, a Heilicher parent and a major in the IDF reserves, is raising $6,000 to support one of his infantry units that needs tactical clothing. As of yesterday, he has raised $5,200, and we can help him get to $6,000 to supply the 110 soldiers in the unit. Read Shmuel's message and donate.

Halloween Statement

Halloween is Tuesday, October 31. Because we are a Jewish community day school, Heilicher does not include Halloween in its program of holiday celebrations or in its classroom curriculum. The school does not post decorations, wear costumes, or distribute candy/treats. Those rituals are reserved for Purim, an explicitly Jewish holiday. Read more from Heilicher's Halloween statement.

Winter Extracurriculars

Don't forget to register for after-school activities and athletics by Monday, November 20.

Registration for basketball leagues closes this Sunday, October 29. Practices begin Tuesday, November 7, for grades 7-8, and Wednesday, November 8, for 5-6.

Grades 6-7 Parent Meeting

Parents of students in sixth and seventh grade: Please come to a meeting at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, in the Beit K'nesset to learn about experiential learning opportunities for your students. All 6-7 parents are encouraged to attend.

Quarterly PTO Meeting

Please join the Heilicher PTO 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, in the library for updates from the PTO and to schmooze and learn more about updates to Heilicher’s curriculum from Jackie Smith, director of general studies. Jackie will address questions you may have, such as:

  • How is my child learning to read here at Heilicher?
  • What is happening if they are excelling or struggling in reading or math?
  • Will my student be ready for high level math by high school?
  • Why is there so much in the news about reading?

Join us to discuss Heilicher's curricular programs and how they prepare all students for success in learning and life. Jackie will share the background and current state of literacy instruction in the U.S. and here at Heilicher. We will also share what parents can expect from the literacy program, especially in the K-5 setting, as we adopt two new literacy teaching models. We will also talk about math instruction and the pathways that we have for students to achieve at high levels at Heilicher and beyond.

Honoring Our Veterans

In observance of Veterans Day, we will honor veterans during Kabbalat Shabbat on November 10 at 2:15 p.m. We would like to invite any Heilicher family members who have served in the military to attend Kabbalat Shabbat services. Please fill out our veterans form if you are a veteran or on behalf of a veteran so we can include all of our veterans in our list and/or in person.

Arts Opportunity for Beth El's 100th Anniversary

Beth El Synagogue will celebrate its 100th anniversary in January with a community sing-along. Our Heilicher Choir will participate along with other choirs from the broader community. To make this event even more beautiful, our students have the opportunity to create artwork inspired by the songs. The plan is to have three-five illustrations for each of 15-20 songs to be projected during the event. All artwork will be turned over to Beth El. You do not need to be a Beth El member to participate.

On Sunday, November 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., students can come to the Heilicher art rooms to create a drawing. Space is limited; sign up for the Beth El Illustration Project. Parents, please plan to stay in the JCC while your child is participating. There will be a sign-in/sign-out sheet. If you would like to volunteer to assist, please contact Ms. Thor.

Empowering Young Minds: K-2 Parent Development Evening with Dr. Megan Helmen

Families of students in kindergarten through second grade are invited to a Heilicher Parent Development Evening featuring local neuropsychologist Dr. Megan Helmen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, in the auditorium. Dr. Helmen will share techniques for teaching your child to manage their emotions and behavior, based on their own unique strengths and personality. She will take questions after her talk, and Heilicher leaders will be present to share how we use these principles during the school day. RSVP. Childcare will be available.

Save the Date: Yom Dor L'Dor

Yom Dor l'Dor is Heilicher's grandparent and special elders day. Students' guests are invited for an afternoon of intergenerational programming and a preview of their work at school. The fall event will be Tuesday, November 21 at 12:30 p.m. Please share this information with your students' grandparents/special elders.
