UPDATE ON AB 2222

Dear Colleagues,

We regret to share that our early literacy legislation (AB 2222/Rubio) was denied the opportunity to be heard in Committee and, as such, essentially died. We are deeply disappointed Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) and Assembly Education Chair Muratsuchi did not allow our bill to move forward for a vote in the Assembly Education Committee. You can read the EdSource article for more details.

Many thanks to those of you who lifted your voices on behalf of millions of California students who continue to be denied the power and freedom of literacy. AB 2222 had over 60 supporting organizations, more than 1,000 individual petitions, and 16 bi-partisan co-authors. In a matter of days, 500 emails were sent to the chairs of the Assembly Education and Higher Education Committees and Speaker Rivas.

The movement we built in just a few short months is inspiring and has given us the fuel to keep this issue front and center. We will continue pursuing comprehensive early literacy legislation next legislative session, and we hope you will join us!

Our deepest appreciation to Assemblymember Blanca Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) for authoring AB 2222 and her fearless advocacy to improve literacy outcomes for all kids in California.
