EDITOR'S FOREWORD
Welcome to the second issue of 2011 of Recruitment Media News. To all my UK readers, particularly those who attended last weeks RADS, I hope you all had a great night. So, in case you missed them these are the winners. Great to see a good mix of agencies winning. If you're one of our "overseas" readers then take a look at some excellent creative work from what I believe to be a "world leading industry" - read my rant last week about how good I believe we are in the UK at HR Communications! It's also worth looking at all the shortlists. There is some great work there as well and it can hopefully provide inspiration to all in our industry;
It's also been a week of "job boards" are dead from across the "pond", with the WSJ weighing in. See our Job Board News. Must admit, it's beyond me... If job boards don't work, why are billions, yes billions, being spent by recruiters on advertising on job boards?... Get real... recruiters go where the candidates are and today we are in a multi channel market.... The real issue is, which one gives you the "Best ROI"? - and the jury's out... at least until the global economies pick.
The next issue of Recruitment Buzz will have a guest "editor", James Mayes, Co Founder of Tweetjobs, will have his "say". Great week ahead, For those attending The Enhance Media Conference this Thursday, see you there.
Have a good one! Keith Robinson ECOM Digital Ltd

In The Know v2.03 The role of talent
The "War for Talent" rhetoric is about 10 years old. It's an awful way to describe the fact that there is a steep competition for a certain kind of employee. There's really no such thing in the ranks of the over 40 crowd, the ethnic population or the trench level workforce.
The focus on competition for scarce resources shifts our attention away from more pertinent questions like "how to make the most out of what you have".
These five links should give you a refresher on the War conversation and some food for thought about alternative views.
Chinese and Indian Entrepreneurs Are Eating Americas Lunch "America is rightfully worried about its sinking competitiveness, and does indeed need to improve its education system. But it could win the battle and lose the war, because India's and China's successes aren't due to their education systems, but despite them. You've probably heard of Indian outsourcing hotspots like Bangalore and Chennai, but it's not just call centers and software sweatshops Americans now need to worry about: Technology entrepreneurship is booming all over in China and India, and is beginning to innovate; these startups will soon start competing with Silicon Valley. The next Google could well be cooked up in a garage in Guangzhou or Ahmedaba"
Tussle For Talent This is the Economist's review of a new book from the guy who headed Recruiting for GE. The continual pursuit of the best talent did not get easier in the downturn, it got harder. Now, the best players are more aware of competitive dynamics and their value in the universe.
War For Talent 10 years ago, McKinsey started the dialog about the War for Talent with this short whitepaper. Take a moment to read it and see if things have changed. "What is troubling is that most companies are ill-prepared to meet these challenges. Regardless of size or industry, most companies have yet to pinpoint the formula that will make their organization more attractive to talented people. High performers are likely to leave companies where they feel underdeveloped, undervalued, and underpaid. While 72% of all managers surveyed say that winning the war for talent is critical to their companies' success, only 9% are confident that their current actions will lead to a stronger talent pool in the next three years."
The War For Talent is Dying As recently as a year ago, there was massive optimism that social networks would help companies solve the Talent Imbalance. This piece was an element of the exuberance. Today, it seems like the promise of social networks is dimming.
Eric Schmidt: It Is A War For Talent The economy is still cool to the touch. Even so, the competition for the best and brightest is hot in pockets. This TechCrunch piece is a video interview with Google's CEO and focuses on their decision to give an across the board 10% raise.

Job Board News

Job Boards are dead? Not so fast, my friend! How people find jobs and how jobs find people is certainly changing. As with most everything online, social media has become the great disruptor. It used to be that a recruiter could just post their ad in the newspaper and people would apply. Then along came the job boards like Monster and others who moved the game online. And just when it seemed that maybe we started getting our arms around how the job boards worked, social media crashed the party. And we are still sorting out what has changed and what hasn't....Read More
Recruiters rethink online playbook As recruiters wade cautiously back into hiring mode, they're throwing out their old playbooks. Rather than sift through mounds of online applications, they are going out to hunt for candidates themselves. Sodexo's U.S. unit has cut job posts on third-party sites since the recession started. Many plan to scale back their use of online job boards, which they say generate mostly unqualified leads, and hunt for candidates with a particular expertise on places like LinkedIn Corp.'s professional networking site before they post an opening. .... Job Boards: Does anyone get hired? .Now that I've told The Ladders to suck it, people are talking. First this WSJ article, then Eve gets into the action and knocks some job boards. This discussion is very trendy. So I want to know - are there any good job boards out there? Have you been hired from a job board? Have you hired someone from a job board? What are the major differences between these sites? Any of them better than the other? Do you have a favorite boutique/niche job board that you use? Read More
Six Figures Goes 'Freemium' with Job Ad postings Australian job site Six Figures is picking up on the 'Freemium' trend with the launch of their 'freemium' job ad model - Karen Jenkin, co-founder of Six Figures says "an increasing number of modern websites are successfully using the 'freemium' business model to offer an entry-level product free of charge, plus paid versions that provide additional features and value. Some examples of this include Flickr, Skype and 37 Signals." Another Executive Job Board goes down the Ladders route - is this the "LinkedIn Effect?" - Read More

Mobile Recruitment... Here to stay What will happen this year is a further expansion in Mobile recruiting. With the launch of mobile recruiting apps back in 2008, recruiting via Mobile has been evolving. - Where to market my mobile recruiting features
- What will happen if we start using mobile recruiting

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Matching Job Tool Companies sprout up in bunches. In tough times, for example, lots of companies started up to help job candidates with their resumes. In an improving job market, as social media recruiting expands, a number of companies are working on the employee-referral social media connection. Now, a growing cluster of new vendors is in the matching-screening business, a field already occupied by companies like JobFox as well as the one called StrictlyTalent I mentioned previously. These vendors are trying to go beyond the job board by serving employers only the candidates who could be a fit, not the 300 who email a resume in. Just a sample of the new tools includes: I used this in last week's Recruitment Buzz, but it is such an excellent overview of "Matching Technology" and you might have missed it Read It Now
