MARK TWAIN: ON TRAVEL AND WRITING

(VIDEO AND DISCUSSION)

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 @ 1:00-3:00

AND OTHER PROGRAMS ON THE

FOLLOWING THREE TUESDAYS

When we think of Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), most of us equate his name with stories of young boys’ escapades: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huck Finn. While his writing captured American culture, he also established unique approaches to the field of literature that influenced world authors. He has been called our Rabelais, our Cervantes, our Homer, our Tolstoy, and our Shakespeare.  Ernest Hemingway maintained that “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.” Twain saw more of the world than any other American writer of his era, and the world saw more of him, both in print and in person. This video reveals what Twain learned from his world travels and what the world learned from him. Alice Freedman will facilitate a discussion about the ways in which Twain became both an American and universal author and why he continues to be a widely translated writer.

No need to RSVP, but contact Jennifer Young before 11 a.m. that day if you'd like to order pizza at $3 for one slice or $5 for two. Or bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea and designer water will be provided. Click here for a preview of the next three programs.

PLEASE JOIN LLAIC LOVES ART

FOR "CALL OF THE WEST: THE ART OF JOSEPH HENRY SHARP"

A PRESENTATION AND CONVERSATION WITH PHOENIX ART MUSEUM DOCENT EDIE TAYLOR

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 @ 1:30 P.M.

Expeditions and railroads created a desire to see the western landscape. A curiosity about Native Americans also inspired artists to travel West. Joseph Henry Sharp, an artist from Cincinnati, Ohio, was lured by beauty of the landscape and the Plains Indians and later the Taos Pueblo. We will look at his life story and his fascinating art which captures the people and the landscape.

Edie has been a docent for over 19 years at five museums including the Delaware Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art, Brandywine Museum of Art, and Phoenix Art Museum. Being a docent is her passion.

Click here before noon on Tuesday, September 24, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day. For more information about Phoenix Art Museum, visit phxart.org.

LUNCH AT ADRIA, EAST BRIDGEWATER

Please join us on a 45-minute walking tour of Red Meadow Farm’s cranberry bog operation. A knowledgeable guide will take us through the cranberry growing and harvest process, explaining each step along the way. MOVIE MAVENS

PIMPERNEL SMITH (1941)

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 @ 2:00-3:00

“Eccentric Cambridge archeologist Horatio Smith takes a group of British and American archaeology students to pre-war Nazi Germany to help in his excavations. His research is supported by the Nazis, since he professes to be looking for evidence of the Aryan origins of German civilization. However, he has a secret agenda: to free inmates of the concentration camps.” [Just Watch]

Pimpernel Smith was released in July 1941 and would have been produced while the fall of France and most of Europe left Great Britain and the countries of the British Commonwealth and the British Empire standing alone fighting the Axis powers, while London was being bombarded by the Luftwaffe.

Sweden, not to antagonize the Germans, banned the movie. However, Raoul Wallenberg saw it at a private screening, and was inspired to lead an operation to save Hungarian Jews from deportation to Germany. Leslie Howard, director, plays a British professor who in the pre-war years worked undercover to rescue inmates of nazi concentration camps.

Produced during the London Blitz, it stands out with its humor. The current rise of totalitarian government in many countries makes it also topical.

This film is available to rent on Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango At Home. Please refer to the “JustWatch” app for more information. Click here before noon on Thursday, September 19, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day
