MONTESSORI MATERIAL: CURSIVE WRITING

In Montessori, cursive writing remains a cornerstone of the child’s language development. We use the sandpaper letters, chalk boards, moveable alphabet, and special Montessori lined paper to help our children develop beautiful cursive handwriting.

  1. Letter Recognition and Discrimination: Cursive script allows students to recognize and discriminate between letters that may appear similar in print. They are more likely to correctly read and write a cursive “b” and “d” and “p” and “q” without reversals whereas, in print, it is more challenging for them.
  2. Phonemic Awareness: Children who write in cursive can better grasp the relationship between sounds and letters, as they physically connect letters with the phonemes they represent. This continuity aids children in understanding how individual letters come together to create words.
  3. Fine Motor Skills Mastery: The intricate strokes of cursive writing demand precision and control. As students develop mastery over cursive, they simultaneously refine their fine motor skills.
  4. Reading Fluency: When students have a solid grasp of cursive, they can read handwritten texts more effortlessly, fostering a deeper connection between the written word and its meaning.
  5. Multisensory Learning: Writing in cursive engages both the tactile and visual senses, reinforcing the concept of letters in a way that is both meaningful and memorable.

Individualized Learning: Just as Montessori encourages individualized learning paths, cursive writing allows students to develop their unique style. This personal touch in their writing can further solidify their connection to the written word.

We hope you join us in our journey of promoting cursive writing with all of our learners, from Primary to Upper!
