The Prep Post: June 2022

It's been over a month since we tragically lost our beautiful community members to racial violence fueled by white supremacy. Our work has gotten harder and the pain can be intense, but our scholars need us now more than ever. We reaffirm our commitment to racial justice and educational equity, to promoting a world where our students feel safe and have the opportunity to pursue excellence and success in a community that nurtures their individual talents, goals, and selves. We are committed to having difficult conversations and educating our community through our READI programming and Youth Equity Academy.

We are grateful for those who stand alongside us in our work to combat racial and educational inequities.

Celebration

Buffalo Prep's annual Celebration event honors our graduating high school scholars and steadfast supporters in the community. This year, we celebrated 63 brilliant and talented scholars – our largest class ever! Many of these students have been with Buffalo Prep since the summer after 5th grade, spending a remarkable seven years in summer and after-school academic enrichment programming. At this year’s event, we were proud to honor Moog, Inc. for being actively committed to promoting diversity throughout their company and fostering an inclusive workplace and Peter C. Cornell Trust for their impactful and steadfast philanthropy in supporting education and training for people of all ages to meet their social, cultural, educational, health, and economic needs.

Prep Rally Photos!

Prep Rally!

On June 27th and 28th, we welcomed more than 150 scholars to our Buffalo Prep family at our first annual Prep Rally! This two-day student orientation at D'Youville University introduced our newest Preppies to the Buffalo Prep community and culture, as well as prepared them for what they will be learning this summer!

D'Youville will be the new site for Buffalo Prep's Prep Scholars Academy program this summer. This five-week program is a neighborhood-based culturally relevant academic program designed to help scholars excel throughout middle school and prepare them for high school. It gives preference to Hispanic/Latino scholars and offers bilingual instruction. Buffalo Prep executive director Patti Stephen was also recently appointed to the D’Youville University board of directors.

In addition to D'Youville, Buffalo Prep's two other program sites this summer are Middle School Prep at Nichols Middle School and High School Prep on the University at Buffalo South Campus.

Party for Prep!

Party for Prep is back! Join us on August 5 at Soho for a fun summer party to benefit Buffalo Prep! Proceeds will support Buffalo Prep's Angel Fund, which assists students and their families with the cost of education- and enrichment-related expenses.

Admission includes open bar (beer/wine), hors d'oeuvres, music, raffles, and more!
