TRADITION OF SIGNATURE PETITION CHALLENGES AT DCBOE CONTINUES
Did you know that there are 46 signature petition challenges pending at the District of Columbia Board of Elections. Here's the list of these challenges posted online by the Board of Elections.
Most of the challenges are versus candidates who wish to serve, without pay, as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. Most, if not all, of these challenges are made by current or former ANC Commissioners. The overwhelming majority of these ANC challenges are made by individuals who do not live in the ANC single member district (SMD) or ward from where the petitions in question nominate to the ballot or fail. As the law stands these challenges have standing, but should they?
DC candidates and campaigns for all offices above the level of ANC Commissioner that have the temerity to challenge an incumbent are never surprised to see that their signature petitions have been challenged.
A few of these challenges will be addressed at a DCBOE hearing later today. Some challenges have been denied for technical reasons, and others still are under review.
I will report back to you, my fellow Washingtonians, later this week about the hearing and this obnoxious tradition. I hope to have more to report and opine on than just the results. Stay tuned.
