Catch the Winners from the

2024 High-E-Fishin-Sea Tournament

Rough weather the week prior made way for calm seas for us to start the day for the High-E-Fishin-Sea XXXII event. On June 8th, the Palm Beach Air Conditioning Contractors Association held its 32nd Annual Kingfish, Wahoo, Dolphin Tournament at the Rivera Beach Marina.

Competition was fierce and brought in some near tournament record breakers. The tournament was a blast for the 62 enthusiastic fishermen.

Thanks goes out to the weigh masters, PBACCA President Kelly McCann and Past President Steve Sparks who despite the late afternoon storm, kept everything going as the fish rolled in.

By the way, did you get a golf ball at weigh in? Save it to cash in on more fun and prizes leading up to the Golf Tournament in October.

Big winner, Steele Holman from Johnstone Supply Ware Group, took home the Calcutta and 1st place trophy with a historically impressive 64.6lb kingfish. Angela Soland from RGF Environmental Group snagged 2nd place and Lady Angler with a 30.7lb kingfish, and Mike Sklies from CMI Air Conditioning came in 3rd with a 28.4lb kingfish while Ryan Skiles took Jr Angler with a 17.3lb kingfish .

The raffle prizes brought in great excitement. Plenty of people were vying for the Yeti Cooler sponsored by CMI Air Conditioning. Another fan favorite, a 55” flat-screen TV sponsored by Dale Vernatter, went to the lucky John Pollak of CMI.

A huge thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers who made this year’s PBACCA fishing tournament possible.

It was a day of fun, fishing and —a reel good time for all!

PBACCA's President's Letter

Wow, what a great time fishing! Even the weather cooperated and the rain wasn’t as bad as last year! A 63-pound Kingfish and a 64-pound Wahoo, caught by the same angler, started the weigh in. This year’s trophies were designed and made by Andy Sanchez of Pro Tech Protective Coating. These turned out very nice, hopefully starting a new tradition. If you are not familiar with Andy’s work, he applies protective coating to HVAC equipment.

Someone is having a special birthday this month. Can you guess who it is? It's PBACCA! If you can guess how old PBACCA is turning this month, you will win a shirt. Scroll down to make your guess.

Our next Board Meeting is July 11th for the Board of Directors. Our next General Meeting is August 1st when we celebrate our apprenticeship graduation. This will be held at the Beach Club in Lake Worth. I hope you can come out and celebrate with us while we “turn out” the next generation. We are looking for apprenticeship instructors if you are interested, or know of someone who would make a great instructor, please contact me.

Please keep in mind our next event will be our Golf Tournament at the end of October; details to follow in our next edition of the Plenum. I hope you all have a safe and prosperous summer. It is hot out there, please take care of yourself in the heat by staying hydrated. Remember if you stop sweating, it’s not because you are not working hard enough....you are dehydrated.

Happy and safe 4th of July,

Kelly McCann, PBACCA President

The Crucial Role of Filters in Building HVAC Business

Filters. Arguably, it is the most important maintenance-related component in an air conditioning system, yet customers often forget to replace them. Educating customers on this important task can be beneficial to the HVAC business in leading to more work for the apprentices which accomplishes two things: (1)Adding value to the customer by utilizing the "one-stop shop" mentality allowing the mechanical contractor an opportunity to have one of their people "get their hands" on the equipment on a scheduled basis and evaluate their condition while changing out the consumable items (belts and filters). This makes repairs happen before there is a failure and builds a more secure projected revenue forecast. (2) It gets a young apprentice's ears wet, allowing both your company and the new tech to grow and thus, grow your business. Some companies have the filter companies deliver the filters onsite to cut time and costs to make this service cost-positive.

By having qualified techs inspecting and assessing the equipment at least quarterly you'll save the client money and decrease nuisance calls since you will be doing preventative maintenance. Some HVAC companies report they have had some industrial contacts for over twenty years and 80% percent of repairs are done during scheduled maintenance. Considering the uptick in the number of landlords in South Florida in recent years, both with single and muli-housing units, this is an incentive for them to engage in preventive maintenance.

How do you sell preventative maintenance? Try this. Have you ever been to the dentist, and while they're examining your teeth, they ask, "How often do you floss?" You pause for a moment, then confidently respond, "Every day," even if that's far from the truth. The dentist, of course, knows the reality and is testing you.

As HVAC mechanics, we encounter a similar situation. Within 30 seconds of opening an air handler, we can tell exactly how often those filters are replaced.

Filters are essential for protecting the components of the system from dirt and debris, which can lead to:

  • Excess wear and tear
  • Performance and efficiency issues
  • Premature breakdowns

As you are educating your customers, it's important to note that filters are not indoor air quality products. If a system isn't designed to accommodate a high MERV rating, using such filters can cause excess resistance to airflow, forcing the equipment to work harder just to move the same amount of air. Knowing which air filter to use both for your customer's needs and the unit's handling is important. Generally, home air filters have a MERV rating anywhere between MERV 5 and 13, with 13 starting at a hospital grade. A quick tutorial on how MERV ratings work may help build rapport and trust between the company and the customer and assist the customer in the selection of the best filter for their health needs.

Remind your customers that filters only work if you replace them consistently! Keeping up with regular filter changes is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of the HVAC system which is the largest one-time cost for the customer. Regular preventative maintenance is a win-win for both the HVAC business and the customers they serve. For more information to share with your customer, click here.

14 Hour CEU Contractor Class

We are thrilled to report the success of our two-day training workshop, organized by CRG Inc., specifically designed for HVAC/R contractors and technicians. Over 20 contractors attended from all over Florida, making it an engaging event where attendees had the opportunity to ask all their questions.

Held in person at Brown and Brown of Florida, Inc. in West Palm Beach, the classes ran from 8 am- 4 pm on both days. Attendees received top-notch training from local and statewide experts, including our very own PBACCA President, Kelly McCann from CMI AC and Electrical.

Participants had the opportunity to enhance their skills, learn the latest industry techniques, and network with fellow professionals. The hands-on sessions and expert guidance made this workshop an invaluable experience for everyone involved.

Take a glance at the Palm Beach group picture below. A big thank you to all who attended and contributed to making this workshop a resounding success!
