PTISD Curriculum Team to Present at National Conference

Members of the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (CIA) team at Pine Tree ISD have been invited to present at the STEMCON conference in Chicago on April 20. Presenters are Robin White (lead presenter), Dr. Daya Hill, Michele Walker, Dr. Lisa Mullins, Kalli Vanmeter and Kelli Hendrix.

STEMCON is a national conference for administrators and educators from around the nation that come together and share best practices in STEM. The district was selected because of their passion for inspiring girls to become more involved in STEM related careers.

The conference presentation will be the district's Girls in Technology event.

The goal for the presentation will be to create passion in other schools around the nation to begin a GIT event of their own. "It is so exciting to know that PTISD will have an opportunity to indirectly change the number of girls that participate in STEM around the nation", said Robin White, lead presenter.

During the presentation, the team will share with participants the steps and information necessary to host their own event. Each participant will leave with a packet that includes technology stations, lesson plans, parent notifications, invitations and a timeline for planning.

Pine Tree Junior High

This week Pine Tree Junior High students joined students around the nation by participating in Start With Hello week. This program was started by a parent whose 1st grade student died in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting on December 14, 2012. Sandy Hook Promise Start With Hello program empowers students to fight bullying and social isolation by sharing ways to build a more inclusive school community. When young people feel left out or lonely, they might hurt themselves or someone else - but this program can show students in your school how a simple "hello" can help their peers and save lives.

On Wednesday, January 24th a former student, Drue DeHoff surprised PTJH History teacher Cory Whyte  with a US Flag that he carried in Iraq.  DeHoff was in Mrs. Whye's class when he was in 7th grade. They formed a special bond that year.

Mrs. Whye also taught Drue's younger brother last year. Mrs. Whyte is  so proud that Drue honored her with this flag.

Mrs. Whyte plans to frame the flag and keep it forever.

Mrs. Cook held a classroom challenge of her own during 25 Acts of Kindness. The students that completed 25 acts of kindness had their name entered for a drawing to win a $5.00 Sonic Card. Mackenzie Rumple was the winner of the contest.

Pine Tree High School

Competition is the Name of the Game at PTHS

Competition is the name of the game right now at Pine Tree High School. A multitude of students are involved in various things that will further their education as well as possibly earn them state recognition and scholarships.

Pine Tree students Sidney Andrade, Ramon Rubio and Isaiah Perry all earned scholarship money at the Kilgore College Art Symposium recently, while Lexie Green had her artwork moved to national competition in a recent event as well. That art will be judged March 13.

A number of band students have moved from local solo and ensemble competition to state competition. Led by a healthy group of seniors, Pine Tree hosted and competed well in the event this past week. Look for more information on these students shortly.

The Pine Tree Choir has singing events in the next few weeks which could earn those students a spot in state. Danielle Warren is confident her students are working hard and are preparing to represent the school well in these events.

Pine Tree UIL is motoring toward district with competitions at Hallsville and Sulphur Springs upcoming.

UIL Coach Collin Robertson said the team is really shaping up well for a district run, and he is hopeful Pine Tree will send a good number to both regionals and state this year.

The Math Science team under the direction of Deborah Wait and Jennifer Cartwright leads the way, but other teams such as Literary Criticism, Social Studies, Debate and Journalism also have veterans who are ready to step up and win some medals for PT.

Skills USA competition was this week, while in sports girls basketball has made the playoffs and both soccer teams have begun distric t and are playing well thus far. Golf, softball, baseball, tennis and track are also set to get seasons underway and go through the end of school. Power lifting is also in the middle of competitions.

DECA has state competition on February 20 and 21, while one-act play is very busy getting ready for its show. Theatre teacher Lisa Wright is happy with her first cast and crew and says she is hopeful they have what it takes to advance to the next round.

Students are competing in class as well. Seniors are busy finding out their class rank so that when graduation arrives they can earn the honor of being in the Top Ten, or Top Ten Percent. Hall of Fame, Senior Superlatives, Mr. and Mrs. PTHS and Most Likely to Succeed are honors being calculated and voted on at this time.

Teachers and students are getting busy on plans for Innovation Showcase which is set for March 22, and the new members of the BUCS - those for 2018-2019 - have been named and will be helping at that event for their first duty.

PTISD teacher Beeper Kraus is busy getting together a student cheering section that will attend sports events for the remainder of the year and build school spirit for the athletes on the field. This group is in the formative stages but has held several meetings and attended several games.

Cheerleader and drill team tryouts are on the horizon, and meetings for young women and men interested in those teams has begun as well.

Spring is not yet here, but it is a busy time at Pine Tree. The school year is going well for teachers, administrators and students with only a few more months to go.

PACE

Pine Tree PACE Campus and PACE SAVE Promise Club is joining hundreds of other schools from across the United States in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise and taking part in Start With Hello Week, February 5 - 9, 2018.

Start with Hello Week brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation in our schools and communities and empowers young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school or youth organization.

On Monday of Start with Hello Week, PACE students defined 'Hello' via acronyms and poster creations; later, they shared their Hello ideas in group.

The exit ticket for Day 1 of Start with Hello Week was, 'How do you feel when someone says hello to you after many others say nothing?'

Loved. Accepted. Trusted. Happy. Respected. Acknowledged. Proud. Wanted. Good and Strong. Worth it and loved!   ...Just because someone said hello.
ExCEL

Thursday January 25th, ExCEL High School of Choice held its Fall commencement ceremony at the PTHS Theatre. Our graduates worked diligently to meet all the requirements for graduation including accumulating the appropriate number of credits and passing all parts of the STAAR EOC's.

This elegant and classy ceremony was highlighted by one of our graduates, Sabra Welch, who gave an inspiring speech on perseverance.
