Do you love spring flowers, but don't have the space to plant them? Maybe you just like the ease of container planting.  Either way, we have the perfect recipe for spring bulb containers!

Although growing bulbs in containers can be a challenge, layering your bulbs like you would layer a lasagna is a great way to ensure bright beautiful blooms in the spring.  Begin by choosing a pot.  Although any size can be used, it is best to consider how many bulbs you want to incorporate.  Larger pots will allow you to layer a wider variety of bulbs. Usually, a 10-inch deep container will hold two layers and a 14-inch deep container will hold three layers.  Remember, bulbs should be in a container that can take the cold temperatures.  Plastic is best, but don't worry you can add your bulbs to decorative pottery once spring arrives.

Next, grab some potting soil.  When purchasing your soil keep in mind that it should be porous and fast-draining.  Soils that contain a lot of peat moss mushroom compost or manure don't allow for proper drainage and may put your bulbs in peril.

What are we forgetting? Oh! The most important ingredient...the bulbs!  Picking your favorites is the fun part.  Choose bulbs that bloom at different times if you want a more dramatic effect. Tip: Place a layer of gravel at the bottom of your container before you put in the first layer of soil.

Large bulbs (alliums, tulips, daffodils, fritillaria, lilies) should go on the bottom layer.  Top these with soil.  Planting close together is best to ensure
proper root development.  Just make sure your bulbs do not touch.  Follow by additional layers of bulbs, making sure to put soil between each layer until you reach the top of the pot. Keep in mind, the tips of your final layer should be right below the surface. There should be about an inch of space between the top of the container and the top layer of soil.
Tip:  Tulips should be planted with the flat side of the bulb facing outward.  This will create cleaner leaves when growing.

Your newly potted bulbs love moist soil but don't  want to be sitting in water.  A weekly check should tell you if they need more water.  During your weekly check, if the soil is frozen, do not water.  Very wintry weather calls for a move to a covered area such as a garage or shed, but don't store them where they will be exposed to car exhaust.
Also, keep your containers shaded since too much direct sunlight can be harmful during the winter months.

By this point you will have had enough of winter, will be packing that parka away and be excited to see your spring blooms! When the weatherman predicts no more snow or frost, you can move your bulb containers outside so that they can drink in the spring showers.  Your growing bulbs will need more water now, so make sure to check them often.  Soon bright, beautiful flowers will appear! Enjoy them through spring and once the blooms are spent, just like bulbs planted in the ground, leave them to "brown out."  Keep all bulbs that naturalize in the pot and cover with pansies or lettuces for the summer months.  By doing this, you can repeat the process next year.

Now that we have you excited for spring-blooming bulbs and hungry (yum, lasagna), stop in and choose your favorites from our huge selection of premium Holland bulbs by Netherland Bulb Company.  Our knowledgeable staff can't help you with dinner, but will be happy to help you select a great combination of bulbs.
