The Parenting Webinar Series
With the endless array of challenges both within the family and externally (changing economic conditions, heated academic, athletic, extracurricular and social competition, surging peer pressure, and the many negative effects of technological advancement), parents are literally attempting to parent in a "perfect storm."

What's more, scientific evidence suggests that the parent-child relationship is more conflictual than ever before, with many devoted parents reporting a sense of helplessness and frustration in their attempts to "get through" to their kids, support their children's growth and maturity, and feel close to their sons and daughters.

It is unfortunate that the work of researchers, theorists and clinicians who have amassed a considerable knowledge base on parenting and family dynamics rarely if ever actually reaches parents -- precisely the ones who can benefit from this information! Organizing and translating this knowledge into pragmatic, easy-to-understand principles that parents may then apply to actual parenting dilemmas was the inspiration for creating the Parenting Webinar Series.

The goals of The Parenting Webinar Series are twofold: (1) to provide parents with a forum for reflecting on their parenting challenges, and (2) to offer parents didactic presentations on the psychological elements of parenting, family processes, and the dynamics of the parent-child relationship. For those parents who have already heard Dr. Tobin speak, The Parenting Webinar Series provides an opportunity to revisit this material and consider how it may be applied to emerging family issues.

The Four Tiers of Relational Engagement Between Parent and Child on August 7, 2018 (10:00 to 11:00 AM PST)
As the child moves through development into adolescence and young adulthood, the bond with parents changes. In order to promote the child's emerging autonomy, the separation/individuation process requires of parents significant shifts in how they interact with their child. These shifts are difficult for most parents, often because the shifts require a different set of attitudes and competencies than those required during the child's early development.

In this webinar, Dr. Tobin will describe the four tiers of relational engagement that correspond to these shifts. Most parents typically use only one, which is not surprising since it has been "programmed" by evolution.

This presentation offers parents an educational experience that introduces the modes of relational engagement necessary to promote the child's growth through adolescence and into young adulthood.  Psychological theory and the latest neuropsychological scientific research will be integrated into a presentation of the four relational modes that parents need to be able to utilize. After the formal presentation, there will be a Q&A period.
Please note that The Parenting Webinar Series is psychoeducational in nature, not therapeutic, and does not constitute psychotherapy or counseling.
