Volume 2.1| February 1, 2024 | |

The Order of the Arrow is “Scouting’s National Honor Society.” It recognizes those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily life and, by such recognition, cause other campers to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant similar recognition, to promote camping, and to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
Each Unit with qualified members are urged to hold an election no later than April 15th to elect candidates for an Ordeal. Ordeals will be held at Camp Roosevelt in Spring and Fall.
The election should be held at a regularly scheduled unit meeting. Every effort should be made to have 100% attendance of both youths and adults at this meeting. A unit election cannot be held without at least 50% of the unit in attendance. An election team from the Order of the Arrow will be on hand to conduct the election once it has been scheduled.
During the election, the OA representative will also talk about the upcoming camping season at Camp Roosevelt.

Congratulations on your candidacy. Your fellow Scouts have recognized you for this honor because you have demonstrated those character qualities that best exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your daily life. Being recognized by your fellow Scouts is the first step in becoming a member of the Order of the Arrow. The step is to begin your induction process. This will test your camping ability, physical stamina, and mental fortitude. You may have heard rumors about the induction, but I assure you that you have nothing to fear. With true spirit and strength of heart, you will have no problem passing this time of testing. It will be a very meaningful yet challenging experience.
This year, two induction weekends are scheduled. The first one will be held at the Katahdin Scout Reservation (Camp Roosevelt) on May 31st through June 2nd, 2024. The second will be September 20th through the 22nd, 2023 at Katahdin Scout Reservation (Camp Roosevelt). You must complete your induction during one of these two weekends otherwise you must be re-elected (youth) or nominated (adult) by your unit if more than a year passes since your election.
The cost for everything will be $60.00 for the weekend. This may seem a bit expensive, but it covers the cost of all meals, the OA handbook, sash, pocket flap, and a year of dues. Please make all checks payable to the “KATAHDIN AREA COUNCIL” or “KAC”.
For the weekend you will need a candidate registration form, BSA medical form sections A, B1, B2, sleeping bag, ground cloth, a complete Scout uniform, work clothes, gloves, a Scout’s outdoor essentials, bug dope, an extra smaller pack, and extra clothes. Please keep in mind the radical Maine weather climate; in other words, BE PREPARED and dress appropriately to endure the elements. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD. All medications must be checked at the registration station upon arrival. Registration will be between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Friday night. It is important that you register on time and earlier is better.
After induction you will be eligible to purchase OA items at the OA store on Saturday evening. You should bring money if you would like to buy additional patches or other OA items. An OA orientation session will be held Sunday morning at all induction weekends. The weekend will complete at 11:00 am, and you may check out following the orientation. Please have your ride ready to pick you up at that time. It is important that you stay for the entire weekend.
I hope to see you at one of the induction weekends.
Yours in Scouting,
Evan Aspinall
Lodge Chief of Pamola Lodge
