From Dean Carroll Ann Trotman
The winter break is just around the corner for our students and faculty, and there’s a lot going on in the college. We stay busy right up to the last day of classes with all kinds of activities that include dental professional events like the one in the photo above.
It shows that our Division of Dental Hygiene (DHY) was well-represented at the 100th Annual Session of the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association (ODHA). Faculty members Denise Messina, BS, MDH; Cory Williams, BSDH, MDH; and Bridget Wright, BSDH, MACPR, represented the Columbus component of the ODHA as an alternate delegate, trustee, and delegate, respectively. From the Class of 2024, DHY students Justin Villarreal and Kyla Theis represented Ohio State as student delegates, and Macy Burchett and Piper Sullivan served as alternate student delegates. Kudos to all for contributing to this important professional meeting!
We also showcase Dr. Jacinto Beard, a graduate of the Class of 1990 and a general dentist in Columbus. In addition to serving the local community as an oral healthcare provider for more than 30 years, Dr. Beard was recently asked to join The Ohio State University Foundation Board. He is the first College of Dentistry alumnus to serve in that significant role.
We highlight Dr. David Danesh, an alum of the college’s Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry who was recently certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). As an ABPD Diplomate, Dr. Danesh is recognized as a pediatric dentist who provides care that meets the highest standards of excellence.
Then there are the “Buckeye Family Photos” that show our students, staff, faculty, and alums at events outside the classrooms and clinics. We share these photos so you get a sense of what it’s like when the college community gets together at the Dental Hygiene 5K that raises funds for Gives Kids a Smile events; the Staff Service Anniversary lunch that celebrates staff members’ contributions to the college; the Midwinter reception for alumni in Chicago; and the Pelotonia event that included our students, staff, and faculty who rode their bikes across the state to raise funds for cancer research.
A final news item is titled “Share Your News with Fellow Buckeyes.” This is an invitation to every alum who would like to share career highlights, news about important life events, and photos that will be included in our alumni magazine -- The Dental Journal. So take a moment to send your news along, and give us a chance to brag about you and your success stories!
Although this is the last newsletter for 2023, I am looking forward to the New Year that will bring more stories about what we are doing, what we have done, and what we will do moving forward. In the meantime, I wish you all the very best as you get together with friends and family during the winter holiday celebrations ahead!
